I'm looking into getting a small folder, possibly to EDC but mostly for occasional use and collecting dust while sitting around waiting for the end-of-the-world/hoping I never actually need it kinda stuff.

I saw a picture of a SOG Trident on another forum and thought it looked really cool. (brought me back to my Boy Scout days of lusting over nifty knives).

I really like the "groove" which allows you to cut line without opening it.

I like the tanto point, and the black TiNi finish.

You guys have any opinions on SOG knives generally or hopefully on this knife specifically?

Maybe shoot over to bladeforums.com and do a quick search. I have the SOG Pentagon Elite and it is a nice, although somewhat large-ish knife. I have no exp with the Trident, but it is on my list of "to get" knives. I can tell you about the arc-lock, though - it's very solid and locks up smooth.

I've posted over there too and haven't found too much yet.

I haven't found a lot of bad things about it (which is good) but I haven't found a lot of good either, which makes me just a little hesitant.

I guess it could just be a decent middle-of-the-road knife that nobody really talks about either way.

Well the only reservations I personally would have with the Trident is the size (I don't really need a knife that large for the city and I have enough camp/trail knives) and the tanto blade. It's just me, but I think that the clip-point blade seems more functional than the tanto - but again, personal pref. If you can score a good deal then I say get it :grin2: If you want a folding knife for camp/trail, then I would also suggest looking into the RAT1 folder - inexpensive and tough - no frills.

I did a lot of research on it about a year ago. The majority of it came back negative. The groove performs poorly, and 550 cord hangs up in it. Since that was it's biggest draw to me, I decided against it.

Good to know.

I have a SOG Trident. It's by far my most expensive knife; in fact, I still carry a "beater" knife with me to cut dirty/gunky/etc. materials.

I've never used the groove, so I don't know how well it performs. Hopefully, if I'm ever on an inflatable boat and need to quickly cut a line of some sort, it'll work reasonably well.

I just now tried out the groove by rolling up some used plastic shrinkwrap and twisting it tight, making a cord-like shape. It took a couple tugs, but wasn't too bad.

It has a little sliding lock which is pretty handy. It took me a little while to get used to the assisted opening (and avoid smudging the blade with my thumb in the process), but it's easy now.

It's much smaller and lighter than I expected.

If you want, I can take pictures or videos of it.

Pics showing the size of the knife in your hand or next to common known flashlights would be cool!

Nae problem, laddie buck! (I don't know where that came from, I just felt like saying it. :) )

I'll add pics to this post in a bit.

Well, trying to edit that post froze my IE window, so I'll make a new one.

I have to agree- I really like the Trident. I have the clip point version w/tiger strips.

It is kind of big for "city" carry, but it isn't too heavy and the bayonette clip keeps the knife riding low provided you've got a deep enough pocket to accomodate the full length of the handle. The opening action is one of the fastest, easiest and most relable I've encountered. The thumbstud just requires a little nudge and you're good to go. The Groove is pretty take-it-or-leave as far as I'm concerned, but it doesn't bother me that it's there. Good purchase IMO :).
