Heads up for bargain hunters, Maplin are doing a solar re-chargeable lantern, with 2 AA NiCD`s and White LED, yup not amber, for £4.99.

I have some of those, they`re pretty nice. Typical that they`d put the price down further not long after I bought four! Brighter than some other white-LED solar garden lanterns I have though. They seem to run brightly for a fair few hours after an average South Wales day, and longer when the sun`s been out. I would be tempted to say they are regulated to a degree too.

But not quite as bright as this one may look. This is a long exposure shot (30"/F2.3/ISO100) taken the other night:

BLAST! Aberdeen store doesn't have any. No point in ordering online, as by the time I've added P&P onto that, they suddenly stop being so cheap.

Oh, well, will keep my eyes open for them in the future!
 
Ask your local store to order them for you. This way, they pay for delivery. You just have to go and collect them.
 
Safeways are currently advertising a promotion in the petrol stations for £5.99 for solar powered light, seen the ads but not the light :-(

Worth trying to get Maplins to get some in store unless you need a pile of stuff and get free postage over £30?

Opened up a Maplin light, 2 650 maH NiCd`s, hmm 2.4V unless they have a new tupe of white LED, nup, what looks like an inverter based around a 4011 quad nand gate and a few transitors for the Light Dependent Resistor dusk sensor.
Also space on PCB for 3 LEDs in parrallel.
Pretty good going for £4.99.
