Hi all,

I am currently running my XML T6 at approximately 2800 mah in a Solarforce L2 host.
When I run it at high (100%), the entire flashlight body (bezel, battery tube & even the tail cap) becomes warm within 5 min. After 10 mins, it will start to become a little too hot for me to hold.

I have wrapped my P60 drop in with copper tape to make it snug fit inside the L2 host.
My question here is, is it normal for this emitter (XML T6) to heat up so quickly with this kind of host?
And what can i do to improve it, other than running it at lower power?

Its normal for dropins running over 2 amps or so to start getting warm to very warm. I have one at 3 amps that does what you discribe. Copper wrapping it was a great way to help move the heat out, but a small light with high current its going to get warm to very hot. Anything you can do it increase the mass such as a cyro head, lead potting of the pill is just going to give you a little longer runtime until it gets too hot again. The problem is limited surface area and air flow to bleed out the 12 watts or so your generating.
 
I have a Solarforce 3 mode XM-L T6 that runs about 0,9 Amps on high with an Eagletac 17650 battery and i can run it for 30 minutes without it getting too hot.But maybe you have a different module.
 
Okie, it is good to know that it is normal.
I am planning to reduce the current to approximately 2amp to see if I can get a good balance between runtime & light output.

BTW, one more question.
I am current running it on 1 x 18650 (3.7V) cell because it is recommended.
Will there be any negative consequences if I were to run it on 2 x 16340 (7.4V) cells????
 
You could burn out the drop-in by running it on 2 Li-Ion cells if the LED driver isn't made to handle that voltage. Commonly available drop-ins can run on one Li-Ion or 2 CR123 cells [6V]. A "buck" voltage driver reduces the incoming voltage down to a voltage the LED can handle. If you have any specs for your drop-in look and see if it has a working voltage range. If the range is 3V - 6V its made for one Li-Ion. If its 6V to 8.4 or higher its made for two Li-Ions and can handle the higher input voltages.

Assuming the driver is rated for double the voltage of a 18650 you should see higher output. By the sounds of things doubling the voltage to his drop-in doesn't sound that wise, regardless of voltage range. :|

I have a Kenji quad nichia 219 P60 dropin with a perfect snug fit using computer CPU thermal paste.

It runs at 5.6A with 800 lumens and gets unbearably hot in 3 MIN with a fresh charge.

I wish I had your 10 min.
 
The working voltage range for my emitter is rated at 3.0 - 4.5V, so I thought I can run it at the max voltage to get the max output.

Why would you attempt to run the emitter (what you probably mean is the driver) at 7.4 volts with two 16340 cells? (3.7V + 3.7V)

If it is a drop-in LED SOLARFORCE XM-L T6 3.7V - 8.4V, there is no problem, unless it is a 3.7V only.

Nope, it is not that drop in that I am using.
I got both the emitter & driver as separate items from DX.
And the emitter is rated at 3 to 4.5V, but nothing was mention about the driver.

Btw, I am using the 8*AMC7135 2800mAh 5 mode driver.
I am really not aware of any voltage limitation about this driver, or if it is a 'buck' driver or not.

Yes! I have a R2 which performs much better when running at 7.4V (2*16340) than when running at 3.v (1*18650).
But runtime for the 18650 is much much better though..

The only option if your looking for longer runtime heat wise in a p60 is more heatsinking or less power. Most do not want less power, and its restricted internally, gotta go outside, you have to look at a finned bezel IE Ronac's Cryos or Cryos M2, or Five Mega's Beefy P60 Heat Sinked Bezel.
 
Can someone help me before I bought a Solarforce host?

I nave some protected 18650, those batts are big, some of them dosent fit in my others 18650 lights. What is the size of this host? It is big inside?

I have 3 different kinds of 18650 and all fit into my Solarforce host.
