I purchased a couple of L2i hosts, along with Solarforce LC-1 Cree R5 drop ins in the 3 mode H-M-L (.8-4.2v). In one host, I placed regular 1.5v Duracell AAA's, and in the other, I placed Energizer 900ma 1.2v rechargeables. Obviously the regular batteries make the LED much brighter. The rechargeable batteries are significantly less bright, nonetheless, very workable and usable in the 3 mode fashion.
My question is, will I do any damage to the drop-in by running the light on a significantly less power source (900ma rechargeable batteries)? I had the light on for about 1.5 hours, and the head never even got warm. It stayed cool, just as if the light was off. I didn't really notice much drop off in brightness.
I am very impressed with the L2i host. Excellent quality, and very well built. I wanted to keep a nice balance of lights and batteries, just in case I have no power to recharge my 18650's.
