I do the same stuff all the time before I got my hot airblower. Professional smd removal is done by infrared heating. Home office use oven baking technology(OBT) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

IMHO the video is crazy. The person's hands is trembling as hell. It will work once or twice but I doubt you will be successful at all times. And that iron tip is BIG /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif. You will+can do a better job with a smaller or standard tip!

I don't recommend the way soldering wick is applied. The reason for the wick to fail is because the flux has oxidized/burned. My experience tells me that you cut soldering wick into smaller length, say half an inch so the rest of the wick don't get heated up. You get fresh wick all the time.

It looks like the person applied extra solder to make the heat flow on to all pins. This is dangerous as that extra solder is a very good heat conductor bringing extra heat to the IC chip. Unless the chip is already toast. I used to do that in my earlier days.

Now, I use a thin enamel wire. Loop through all the IC pins. Apply heat to pins and pull out the enamel wire pin by pin. This way your pins get seperated from the circuit traces and don't get bent too much. You won't waste too much solder so no extra fumes from the flux and your wick can do other stuff.

Eeeek - no way is that how to desolder SMDs. I'd be amazed if the PCB tracks are still all intact after that punishment!

If you don't have a 'proper' hot air tool, then a butane soldering iron WITH the hot air attachment does a pretty good job. Apply even heat to the pins and PCB and carefully lift the chip so as to not peel traces or pads.
