Make a green 120 volt AC electroluminescent panel intended for retrofitting exit signs. Costs about $50 (US) You could use it for whatever you want. They offer a five year guarantee and claim a ten year useful life expectancy. (They dim with time) I have no particular connection to the company and have not tried their product.

I bought a small kit from edmunds scientific that included a power supply for hobby signs. I had intended to use it to back lite my ti 83 calculator, but turned out the piece of material just glowed green, not that bright at all. The piece of material was the size of a pack of smokes.

Micromark used to sell an E.L. starter kit which included the inverter and an E.L. sheet that could be cut into various shapes or even into multiple lamps. Haven't seen it lately though.
