For me it's because I have vowed to never again buy a flashlight that uses 3 AAA batteries. I can't stand those any more.

Yeah looks like Spark kinda slid that one in there under our noses.
from the pics it looks like the same size as the 2AA, but with a noticeable run time difference. That could mean a though sale for Spark!
I love my SD52. That 70lm for 7 hour mode is great at work.

I've never understood why Spark wanted to compete in the crowded 3AAA market. I'm sure it's a fine light, but there's so many inexpensive, and in some cases hi-quality-inexpensive, competing lights.

I bet if they'd made a small 1AAA light, there'd be quite the interest.

Looks like the SD73 comes with the same (IMHO) odd dark anodized bezel. Why reduce output of the light like that? Polish the bezel or paint it white. Or better yet, sell us that reflector bezel replacement we've heard about.

Interesting. I'd really rather have a very small 1xAAA light myself, preferably pure flood. I let myself buy a high CRI preon 1, and there are a few odd AAA based headlamps strewn in our camping gear, but I personally don't use them, and I'm not interested in paying a premium price for a multi-AAA headlamp.

Now, if I could find something that ran on 1xAAA that also had a flexible mount so I could point it anywhere and fine tune the position, with a neutral tint, that maxed out in the 40 - 60 lumens range that could clip onto a hat or a helmet, I'd be all over it.

I think the answer to your question is that the 2xAA versions also runs on 14500, and in order to get the Super mode (280 lumens) you need to run the 14500, the AA batteries do not get you super mode on spark lights. Where the 3xAAA is capable of getting the 280 lumens, without using a specialty battery.

Yes 3xAAA lights are everywhere, but in my experience they do not come with a durable Aluminum body, and 280 Lumens.
