Our home owners association has an entryway sign that we are lighting with an LED spotlight. The light is from an old LED garden light. I redesigned the whole lighting system. I added a micro-controller with a number of options to light the light. A buck puck plus drives the light. I added a bigger panel and battery.

The thing has been working great. Until tonight I noticed 4 LEDs that were out. Now I need to check it out but I figure it is only a matter of time before the LEDs start going out for good.

The current light has 6 rows by 18 columns and draws something less than 500ma @ 12V.

I was thinking of replacing the LED array with 2 or three of those LED bulb lights found on Deal Extreme.

Cab anyone recommend something? I have included some photos of my current lighting system below.

Hey there spinnaker!:welcome:

Nice project! Looks like you know what your doing. When one goes out, if the others get more current, which is likely, then the rest will burn out even faster. I don't know what to recommend but I bet someone around here does. I've seen tons of wired lighting options, but no experience there personally.

Fortunately , I adjusted the Buckpuck a little less than what the total array of LEDs will take so I should be OK in that regard as long as more don't go. Looks like it is 4 LEDs that are out but I'll bet only 1 is bad. Or maybe it is just a bad solder joint. If is is just one bad LED I should be able to jump it out for now. I'll be checking that out later to see what the actual problem is.

It would be sure great to get some advice on what LED lamp to use for a replacement.

I was thinking of using something like this.

I have to admit, when I saw "500mA at 12v", my first thought was a Cree MC-E LED with the four LED elements wired in series. Glue a suitable optic to it, put it in a sealed box with good heatsinking, and that ought to do it (assuming that there is a good current regulator driving it).
