spyderco rattles!!! How about yours?

Hi all!
I have a 10 year old Endura with zytel handle and I recently bought delica II which is a stainless handled model.
I love the knife but I'm so disappointed that both of their blades(even the new one) rattles a little!
I can feel it merely when cutting off a piece of wood or hard paper. It's not that bad but I don't feel so good using it.
What about your spyderco? Maybe the lock-back system makes the problem..
BTW my Magnum knife(real cheap one) locks the blade really secure(liner-lock).
I hope this rattling is not only for mine...

Send both of them back, Spyderco will fix or replace 'em for free! You have a lifetime warranty on those Spydies...

While liner locks are a bit more secure, I have both those knives, never had any problems with rattling. You should have that fixed. Did the Endura always do that, or is it a new development?

That is one of my gripes about Spyderco, it would be nice if they had a torx screw for the hinge pin so you could fine tune the knife to your satisfaction. Sure torx may not completely solve the problem, but it will give you more control. Same thing goes for pocket clips. I have no idea why anyody makes a one screw pocket clip like Spyderco does. Granted on some Spyderco models they are three screw, but it's usually on their metal handled knives and not the FRN models.

Now even though I have said that, I still really like Spydercos a lot! They are great knives. BTW, Spyderco is having a one day sale today. Check out http://www.spydercostore.com

Just to avoid confusion, the site listed above is not the Spyderco Factory site.Just to agreew ith everyone in the thread here you should send them back and they will be fixed/repaired as long as they have not blatantly been abused.
RebelRam,could you elaborate a little more on what you don't like about the clips?

Yes. My endura rattled since when I bought it in 1994..

You guys don't have any tiny movement at all with your blades when locked? Just want to know that... Tightly locked and doesn't move a nano meter?

Folding knives have moving parts, therefore if used they will wear. Even new knives can have a bit of play. Its common sense, you have to decide if the play is minimal and has it had any affect on the usability. Or is the play very sloppy and will it affect secure lockup?

I had an Endura for several years, you could actually feel the blade move if pushing the edge through tough material. It was un-nerving at first, but the knife was solid and I continued using hard for a long long time. I finally retired it because I had sharpened the serations away over time, and it was getting ugly.

I think as knife/light/gadget people we tend to expect pure perfection in everything. We get to the point that if anything is off by even .00001" we freak and imagine the worst.

No, the play doesn't affect the usablity but does affect my feeling toward perfection.

OK what I don't like about the clips...
Basically on a clip I am looking for something that is solidly fixed to the knife. The Spydercos with the FRN handles use a single large screw to hold the clip on. With time, that clip can loosen up and twist around. A co-worker of mine had an Endura and that was his biggest complaint. Now the stainless handled Sypderco models used 3 torx type screws to secure the clip to the handle. This prevented the twisting problem.

Now as to how to solve this problem with an FRN knife.... I'm not real sure being how Spydercos do not have any metal liners. I have some CRKT's that have a Zytel handle, but holes are drilled through that and into the 420 steel liners and then those liners are threaded so that they can then use torx screws to secure the clips.

Just a quick note, as mentioned in previous posts on bladeforums, a small amount of play is normal and
required for a top lock. If it rattles, though, that doesn't sound normal.

As to pocket clips, remeber these are $30 knives, if you perfection then you should consider spending more.

None of my Spydies rattle. I think you should send them in as suggested. I think that they are a very good value and make good users. I have kept a new Native pe in s30v and a new Military pe in s30v the rest I recently sold when I decreased my knife collection. These 2 are a great combo for me, a smaller one for city/suburban EDC and a larger one for weekends and field use, etc... When the Paramilitary comes it could replace the Native... Maybe...

I experienced "clip-spin" with an older Delica of mine, sent it back for warranty repair and Spyderco replaced it with an updated model. Spyderco has addressed this problem by adding a reinforced wall around the clip-well area. If you keep the screw tight (use thread locker if you need to), the wall should keep the clip from working it's way out. I like the one-screw design -- it integrates the lanyard hole and doesn't provide any extra holes in the handle to gunk up.

Ok cool! I was looking through the 2004 Spyderco catalog last night and I thought they had made that change, but couldn't tell for sure from the pictures. I guess Spyderco does listen after all.

I received my new Delica S.Steel handles plain edge today and it is my first Spyderco, I have other knives like CRKT M-16 and a few Gerbers and I can't compare them with the Delica, it is simply perfect, no rattles at all, the finish is like a swiss watch and having steel handles, I think it is thinner and better for the pocket than zytel or plastic handles.The clip is very strong but doesn't damage the pants fabric...
