similar to a thread here ive just read - some LED street lamps have been installed in my area (manchester UK) so obviously i was very curious i did a little reaserch and found the manufacturer

a few emails back and forth and the rep came in my office and give a presentation and brought a working unit in for me to look at and all because i was a geek that showed some interest!:twothumbs

was very interesting

i also took in some high quality flashlights and a floodlight i have that uses 4MCEs

he brought the smallest unit they do - it used 14 cree xre's (i could tell looking through the optics) the colour was about 5500-6000k

my floodlight was brighter and used neutral colour (4100k) leds it was a fun experience

the technical info claimed 110 lumens per curcuit watt and i think they must be using high bin emitters to get that

the info he showed me differed from the info on the website and he told me they claim lower lumens on the site ( to keep it from competitors) but the numbers did roughly add up

on my estate i have the 36 led units and the tech info he showed me said about 4800 lumens and 50 watts - they are driven at 350ma and use optics

personally they are superior to every street light i have seen appart from the colour

the colour is still good and better than SON SOX MV and some MH but not as good as the HID ones or the flourecents
but thats just because they are using the cool whites! if they used neutral whites or even the bottom of the cool whites they would be perfect

the light distribution is better
glare is reduced
wasted light reduced
colour rendition increased
visually units look good
brightness is probably the same but gives impression of being brighter
energy efficient (when you factor in that you need less light as you can get it where you want it)
long life (100,000h at 350ma is probably possable)
the unit is used as a heatsink - leds are directly fixed to the case - he said they use gold wire or something
they offer a direct replacement up to 10year garentee

ill take some photos later of the actual street but for now here is the website

That was exactly my conclusion in the thread I started. Glad we agree and I'm not the only one. My theory is that after we get past the 'neat-o' phase we'll start to see a broader interest in neutral white lamps.

Same here. Anything between 4000K and 5000K looks great in street lighting. I could probably get used to 6500K also but I might be in the minority.

From my experience, anything above 4500K is pretty useless for roadway lighting, esspecially in inclement weather. (Clear mercury lamps +/-6500K were really bad for wet weather.)
