Strangest Beam Ever!

While wandering the isles at Target the other evening I decided that I deserved a new flashlight /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Looking at the vector spotlights that people have been talking about I settled on a 500k cp smaller one for under $20 rather than something super huge and heavy.

Overall, I am not impressed by it's construction quality. It's cheap plastic, but then what do you want for $20? The reflector initially looked pretty good. It's deep and actually made of metal to withstand the heat of the bulb. There is a 12v SLA battery in there too.

The beam however, well, the beam is the most unusual beam I have ever seen. What do you think of these?

I think that this light needs to be modded with some 5watts Luxeons... Though the spinning handle is interesting.


EDIT: HEY This is my 1000th post! Wooo to me! Some of them were even about flashlights. Where's the confetti and balloons?

The oval shape's quite wierd for a reflector. It's a pretty bad spotlight, at that. I tried it once at Walmart and refused to buy it because its build quality was so cheap, I felt the handle would've busted by just regular use...

That is truly the most bizarre beam ever. But how does it throw?

Have you tried messing with the bulb and reflector positioning? I've found it sometimes helps with beam adjusting (although that is one weird beam pattern there!). Maybe some Writeright or similar lens covering for beam smoothing? Good luck! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
The way that the lamp is attached to the back of the reflector doesn't give you much wiggle room. The throw is OK, but not spectacular. It's so messy though that it gives me an unhappy feeling. Right now I haven't decided quite what to do with the thing. I might try putting a 5 watt SE in the existing reflector and see what happens. But I could trim 4 or 5 inches off it by pulling out that reflector and using a 30mm optic with it. But then the thing is so heavy and big around that it may not be worth it.

For now I'll just keep it as an incandescent and see how I like it as time goes on.
 
I also have one of these things. The switch sucks. Take the light apart and adjust the not that holds the switch in place so it turns ond and off when you want it to. You'll have to glue it in place so that it doesn't unscrew or screw in tighter. It is still a bit tempermental, but not as bad as it can be if it gets loose. My beam looks almost identical, I guess that it's just hte nature of the beast.
 
I think the light must be incorrectly centered like arioch said. When I put a 5mm led in a minimag, I didn't get it centered correctly at first and it looked kind of like that. It is to bad there is no "wiggle room." Well, at least now you can demonstrate a solar flare...
