People, indeed this has been thoroughly discussed in other threads. My own two conclusions are:

1. Defending yourself effectively with anything, be it sharp, blunt or bang, requires training. Same goes for bare hands fighting.

2. When used as an impact weapon, a crenelated bezel will do a lot more damage than a similarly used plain bezel.

Using a weapon without training has risks involved. Relying on a single object, tactic or technique will never be adequate. Fighting skills or tools are not a substitute for clear thinking and fast acting. Best way to get out of danger is not getting in it in the first place, but this is not always feasible. Using a flashlight with a crenelated strike bezel is not a solution by itself, but it may be a "force multiplier", all other things being equal.

Coming from a law enforcement background and a current Defensive Tactics Instructor I think the strike bezels are extremely useful!

Policetacteam -- Superb post! I agree completely. BTW -- Interesting method of take down (that utilized your M2) of the perp.

Have a Happy New Year!

As others have said, with the proper training they could be usefull. For others as a last ditch effort it's probably better than nothing. I bought mine because I liked the way it looked, no practical reason at all except for the protected tail cap that doesn't come on in my pocket. And because it looks cool, did say that already. :-)

I would like to reiterate a few things. First, I am not promoting the use of violence and I am certainly not promoting that everyone with a crenelated strike bezel go out and bludgeon someone to death. I was merely attempting to show its different uses within the law enforcement community!!! I received a PM from a member who was more than upset with my post. His message was sincere and I believe he misinterpreted my post. If the bezel is to be used a last ditch defensive weapon you should be instructed by a professional or be able to back up what you did in court with sound reasons. I personally feel that we have a wide array of people from different professions that frequent this site. Not everyone is going to be on the same page all the time! I very sincerely feel that concealed carry is a must in this day and age. Others, I'm sure, will disagree with me. The point is that we all have a difference in opinion! That is what makes these forums fun, interesting, and usually a learning experience. If I have in some way come across as promoting violence over rational thought I sincerely apologize!

In no way, shape or form did you "promote violence." You simply stated that a scalloped (crenelated) bezel can and has been of utilitarian value within the LE Community. No apology needed!

Take care - and God Bless.

Happy New Year, too!!! :twothumbs

Keep up the good work. Semper fi. Carry on.

I've read that some don't like them. They catch on things, ugly and no use.I don't have a problem with them getting hooked on anything, and very much like the defense purpose of them.If someone was going to do me harm,i'd use my E2D before my knife or gun (unless they had one ;)).I know i wouldn't want to be whacked in the head with one,so why do some say they have no "usefull purpose"?Just curious.

If your fighting "toolbox" includes hammerfist strikes, then an E2D in hand will enhance those strikes nicely. Interestingly, such strikes being gross motor skills, are very common in those without training (boxing, karate, etc.) Just observe the street fights of untrained adults, kids, high school chicks:twothumbs, etc., and watch how they hit each other. :D

Because some of us don't go around in fear of being attacked, armed to the teeth. We just want to light our way.

I might like it 20+ years ago ;)

Now that I'm older and wiser, I think it looks too "juvenile" :shakehead

I could absolutely smash anyone my size throwing all haymakers and hammerfists. xD It's just so stupid!

...why aren't there any high school chick fights around my area? D:

Policetacteam,

Thanks for taking the time to post.

I've mentioned it before, but any weapon that retains DNA is helpful to investigators in solving crimes. Strike bezels are also likely to leave characteristic "teeth marks" making identification and prosecution of criminals easier.

Craig Peyer, ex-CHP officer and murderer, was convicted almost entirely on the strength of Cara Knott's DNA on his Mag Lite checkering--the murder weapon.

I think everyone is missing one important point. Lets forget about strike bezels for a minute. Having a flashlight that is palm size (similar to E series SF) is pretty valuable when confronted with an altercation. Having a flashlight or a roll of quarters in your hand (fist load) will save your from broken knuckles after you throw the first punch. Most pro fighters and boxers will know when fighting bare hand, if you throw a punch will full force, you will do major damage to your hand, you need to back off a little when you make contact, or else game over. If your confronted with a few troublemakers, then your in deep dooda. Having a flashlight or similar in your hand acting as a fistload will great reduce personal injury and mite be all you need to get out of that situation. If your attacker is high on narcotics, then thats when the strike bezel comes into play.
The most vulnerable is the mature/older crowd. They are much easier targets to an attacker. So having something to act as a fistload would be even more valuable. I've been into SD for about 19 years now, and I've been confronted with a lot. And no matter where you live in the world, trouble isnt far behind. It would be great to live in a fantasy world, but we have to get real.
Happy 09 to all CPF members.

Strike Bezels -- The SureFire E2DL's, In Particular

And no matter where you live in the world, trouble isn't far behind. It would be great to live in a fantasy world, but we have to get real.

Amen! Being prepared doesn't automatically mean "being paranoid" or necessarily equate to "looking for trouble." Far from it. I, too, was very deeply involved with Martial Arts from 1972 until 1992 when my Instructor (and very close personal friend) passed away. It's truly amazing how one's perspective and sense of awareness can be so dramatically altered and improved via the practice/mindset of said Arts.

That being said . . .

In order to realistically protect one's self and loved ones, it's necessary to be aware of one's immediate surroundings and it never hurts (pun intended :D) to increase the "perimeter of awareness" of said surroundings. Ask any cop.

Having a SureFire E2DL immediately available, IMHO, provides a valuable TOOL for use in one's defense, as it can be used to identify, temporarily visually incapacitate (at least partially) and, by virtue of its crenelated strike bezel, impart a blow that can physically disable the immediate threat.

I'm very happy (and thankful) to have purchased my E2DL, not only for the aforementioned defensive reasons, but for its incredible illumination capabilities. MAN I love this little light!!! :twothumbs Every Flashaholic should own one.

My $0.02 :tinfoil:

Cheers!

i don't have a strike bezel i carry my leatherman wave for that job:caution:

There have been many threads of this type, and most of them get taken over by people advocating the use of flashlights as weapons. A thread was closed only yesterday for that reason, and we don't need another one now. This one is closed too.
