stupid question

alright, I know this is a REALLY stupid question but does the 5W LS burn 5 Watts of input power? If so, does the 5W Luxeon Star ouput as much light as a 5W Halogen? Is there any way to make it project light far enough for use as a bike light for off-road mtn biking?

The 5W LS nominally puts out 120 Lumens of light at 6.8 V an 0.70 A. This equates to 4.76 Watts.

This is 4 times the wattage of a 1 watt LS at 3.4 V and 0.35 A.

Not surprisingly, this 2 * voltage and 2 * amperage spec is because the 5W unit is actually comprised of 4 1W emitters squeezed together in a 2*2 serial / parallel configuration.

The 120 lumens has an efficiency of about 25.2 Lumens per watt.

The brightest Welch Allyn halogen bulbs approximating 5 watts are rated at an effiency of around 20 Lumens per watt. Efficiency can rise to the 27 to 29 Lumen range between 10 watts and 20 watts.
