so i have a trustfire TR1200 that my soon to be father in law loves! he lives out in the country in the middle of a field and couldnt believe that i could throw over a football field away to see the treeline. i wanna get him a good thrower for fathers day but i dont wanna get him the tr1200 due to the odd batteries and charger. so i need suggestions on good throwers that run off AAA or 123 batteries. looking to spend <$50 total.

thanks

I would suggest the Ultrafire wf-008 recoil thrower
SKU 22934 from dx.
I have this light and it never fails to impress people.

What about one of those 2C Taskforce lights with a Cree from Lowe's. Not sure if they are still available. I think they were about $30.

Unfortunately, there arent a whole lot of high lumen lights that dont' use the funky batteries.

The TK40 is a 8xAA light that has a good throw/flood balance, but its 140 bucks!
The itp A6 polestar uses 6xAA but its a flooder...and costs 80.

So you are pretty much stuck with 2xAA lights. With a decent reflector, these can certainly produce around 200 lumens and throw them pretty far.

However, this is will not be impressive compared to a mighty TR1200, which not only has the throw, but 700ish lumens worth of 5x emitter goodness. It uses about 5 amps, which drives all 5 emitters pretty well.

The best 2xAA light is going to be 4 times weaker. It will probably only look 1/2 as weak though due to how we percieve brightness.

A reasonably cheap option might be a Romisen Flood-to-Throw light, or one of several DX variants like the X2000 flood. These aren't super bright, but they do have pretty decent optics.

How about the Dorcy 220, No funky batteries and it is rechargable. Throws a good strong beam.

If DX is an option you can get the Uniquefire HS-802 which is the best thrower using a reflector that you are going to find in that price range. It uses (2) CR123's or a 18650. The CR123's were one of your options I believe.

I'd suggest you look at the 2xCR123 lights. You can order a whole box of CR123 batteries pretty cheaply online and those should last for a good long while. That way he doesn't have to worry about the usual battery issues.

I didn't read that this was an option; my bad. But yeah, 2xCR123 can be used with many 1x18650 lights, which are higher power.

You can also browse through deal extreme for a high lumen that has a big head and also takes cr123. You can't search on cr123 though. Try 18650 instead.

You might reconsider the Li-Ion option. Shekor charger is a good budget charger (that really cuts off after termination) and there is nothing too weird with Li-Ion batteries as far as you will explain 1 or 2 things before.
