Hi all,

I got my father a Surefire M4 for his last birthday but unfortunately he is finding the runtime/lithium cells a little prohibitive. We have discussed the possibility of me finding him a replacement and swapping it for his M4.

I've decided that a rechargeable light is the way to go for him, but I have no experience in this department. So... what I'm after is a bright, reliable light with a good runtime. He will use it for dog walking and checking out noises outside in the middle of the night... Price isn't too much of an issue, but alternatively if a cheaper light fits the bill I can always use the extra money to get him the E2e/KL1 combo he fancies as an EDC.

Any help or suggestions will be gratefully received, thanks.

The Mag Charger using Powerstream cells has over 2 hours of very bright light. This light is very large however if you need more than an hour of light it is the only one out there and it can be bought for $125 in this configuration. A smaller option would be the Stinger line from Streamlight but only one hour of runtime. In a midsized light the Surefire X10 will give you 60 lumens for 3 hours which would be plenty of light for walking. It will also give you 500 plus lumens which would be great for self defense however this light comes with a $300 price tag. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just spoke with my Father on the phone, it seems that the 1 hour runtime wasn't the problem, it was replacing four lithium cells.

So with that in mind I'm more inclined to look at things like the Streamlight Ultra Stinger, but any further suggestions still welcome.

Thanks for the replies so far /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've played with a Streamlight Polystinger and it's a nice, nice light for the cost and very lightweight too.

Are you opposed to converting the M4 to Li-Ion rechargeables? The M4 should hold 2 168B cells for 7.4v and run a 3-cell lamp nicely, 105 or 200 lu.

TigerLight gets my vote.

Hello Hellz,

Look carefully at the TigerLight FBOP (without pepper spray).

It has a bright beam, reasonable run time, NiMh batteries, is light weight, and quite durable. I might also add that it has a lot of value, is very reasonable to run, and has good WOW value when showing off to the neighbors.

Do I like the TigerLight? YES!!! I have two of them... and try to find a reason to use them every night.

I have the polystinger and I think that's the choice. MC's, TL's, and US's are geared more for throw, not walk the dog. You can still get a good throw from the poly (nothing like the tiger), but it's much more friendly in the 5 to 20 foot range in my opinion.

Might I suggest the L1 as EDC? Only one cell, good runtime, and small. I have the KL1 but the L1 is EDC, even over the A2.

Good luck.

Hello WaltH,

I agree that the polystinger is a great light (as are the MC and US). Maybe Hellz's dad needs to get one of each to help his decision...

As far as walking the dog with the TigerLight, you just need a little longer leash...

i'll second this and also recommend the tl over the ultrastinger. if he wants something a little lighter i suggesst the stinger or poly stinger.

get a textured reflector from flashlightlens. i am very happy with mine, it provides a much more usable spot and flood. sort of a surefire like beam, but much more power.

I agree with Blikbok. Since you have already got a M4, getting 2 of 168b li-ion and MN15, you get 125 SF lumen for 1 hr of runtime. The same li-ion battery will run E2e/KL1 for 3 hrs. One charger, 2 batteries and SF MN15 LA are all you need.

For the recommendation of Tigerlight, I'm not sure that if they ship overseas and 220/240v power supply.

send them yours to texture.

we're all sitting on a gold mind of tl lamps cause we all have "seconds". when the new ones come out(tl emailed me saying 7weeks) we can send out old ones to flashlightlens!

tonight i will decide which lamp i prefer.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I can see this turning into a "get them all (and I'll keep which ever ones he doesn't want)" type situation.

I suppose I should have mentioned that the dog walking involves letting the hounds run around a huge expanse of open fields which is why he wants a bright light, to spot them in the distance.

I've noted all the lights suggested and will sit down with my Dad and discuss his preferences, and then probably get several /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks
