I am buying a Surefire U2 (the newest version) and I want some suggestions on batteries. I am pretty sure I want to go with rechargables, but what kind I am not sure. The 18650s i think used to fit the old version, but now they don't right? I see that there are rechargeable 123s that would fit the body. I want to know which batteries that you like the most are. Any LiFePO4s that could work here? I saw these on powerizer, but they recommend that they not be used in surefires. http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=3476

Is there a skinnier single cell that would work instead of 2 r123s?

Those Powerizers should work fine since it is an LED light. I think many people here are using two rechargeables in a U2.
However you are still left with the problem of possible over discharge, they are the safe chemistry, but still cannot be drained flat.

A 17670 may be the best way to go, I agree with the previous post on operation in mine.

Yes I have seen those and they look ok. But the single cells give you more mah which is good. Using a single cell is also safer.

I would be tempted to try these if I wanted maximum output and didn't care about keeping the runtime up:

They claim tolerance to abuse, and I have heard people on this forum and others using other sizes of that same chemistry type in packs that are sued in very aggressive abuse applications with positive results.

if you're willing to tolerate slightly reduced output the 17670 LiCo protected cell is far more energy dense.
