Even using a single 17670 Li-ion cell in the 2X123 housing [which should be a nice fit] you would need to incorporate low voltage cutoff protection for the cell. Even a single overdischarge will send a Li-ion into its death spiral. My experience is that it will often take another charge or two and then its toast.Originally posted by McGizmo:

The Kl1 will accept from 3 to 9V and has a buck/boost constant current driver. I am concerned that it will gladly eek all the juice a Li-Ion is willing to provide, and then some more..
