Even using a single 17670 Li-ion cell in the 2X123 housing [which should be a nice fit] you would need to incorporate low voltage cutoff protection for the cell. Even a single overdischarge will send a Li-ion into its death spiral. My experience is that it will often take another charge or two and then its toast.
