:shrug: confused a little, the website states 2 speed 3 lumens low 60 high, I've seen another package (says new & improved) that states 1 speed 45 lumens. Feel free to enlighten...
 
The 45 lumen was the old version. The new version is 2 mode 3/60. A great light if you don't need to duplicate the sun.
 
:wave:makes sense but the photo showed (maybe last years) blister pak with the black and yellow "new" improved...logo on the upper right of the package...
 
The older single mode [45 Lumen] KX2 model is still highly sought after. Simply because it'll run 9 nine hours regulated at that output! Not too shabby really..

If you can find one, buy it! :wave:
 
I have the new E2L with the two modes. According to others on CPF the new runs for 60 hours on low(10 lumens) and 6 hours on the high(110 lumens). The older version if I am not mistaken does not have the TIR lens but some sort of convex lens which focuses the light. Anyway, even with the popularity of the old version I can deal with the runtime of the new just fine. :twothumbs

I love the E2L 3/60 lumen model. Very nice run time and even though it is rated at 60 lumen max it is no slouch. Plenty of brightness for camping usage. The long run time sort of compensated for the higher cost of running it on two CR123.

I love the E2L AA too. Running two Energizer lithium batteries I could achieve about 8+ hours coming 9 hours of output before it starts dimming down. Though it is longer than the E2L, it still felt nice in the hand.

That's the same one I have & it's surprisingly powerful. Here are the readings taken in my shop built IS, and all three power sources are nearly identical in lumen output. I understand that the E2L uses a buck/boost driver, so the emitter receives the same voltage whether running 2 primaries @ 6 volts or one rechargeable @ 3.7 volts.

E2L two stage KX2 head = 12/119 lumens (1x17500)

E2L two stage KX2 head = 11/118 lumens (2xCR123)

E2L two stage KX2 head = 11/113 lumens (1x18650)


For a light that can hide in almost any pocket it throws exceedingly well on high, and has a very useful close up beam on low. One of the best from SF, IMO.
 
Did you use a 18650 body tube??? Some sort of mod??? I like those numbers they are better than what I heard.
I bored the SF tube for 18650, having no clue what would happen to the light output at the lower voltage. Some SF models do not use a buck boost converter and show a lower output with the 4.2 volt battery. It was a pleasant surprise to see that the E2L doesn't care what you feed it, it is happy with everything :)

My shop built integrating sphere is not an ANSI calibrated laboratory instrument. It is best used to obtain relative output readings. Looking at the numbers that way indicates that all 3 power sources yield nearly identical output.

Other than boring the tube, the only other mod to do on the E2L is to either add a drop of solder to the rear of the LE (shown in photo below) or to use a battery charging magnet. Flat top cells will not contact the LE unless one of those two mods is used.

I have the KX2 head on an L4 body (Essentially now a E2L). LOVE it. Long runtime on low yet still provides a very usable amount of light. High has a gorgeous beam profile and still more than adequate run time. Mine is the 3/60 lumen model. It does have the TIR optics, but my lens is lightly frosted from the factory. That gives the hot spot a softer profile and provides more spill / corona. If memory serves me correctly some of the lenses are clear and probably have a slightly tighter profile. Pick tghe version that best suits your needs. I do not think you will be disappointed.

Somebody else (bigchelis?) measured the E2L at a similar output, maybe the same, so your reading looks accurate to me. Quite frankly I dont understand some of surefires ratings. We've all talked about how surefire underrates their output ratings and such time and time again, but some of their ratings just baffle. I mean, the light run fully regualted at 118 lumens for around 6 hrs, so where in the heck does the 60 lumen rating come from? Theirs a difference between underrating a light and throwing out some of the numbers surefire does.
 
My E2L-KX2 did 110 OTF in the BC sphere. FWIW, I was using Ultrafire RCR123 cells and Surefire primaries and it did 110 with both cell types.

I also ran mine with an old/tired panasonic CGR17670 cell for a while. It was a flat topped cell and it worked fine... I probably just got lucky with manufacturing tolerances and the likes. Its nice to know the KX2 will work with anything from ~4-8.4V
 
Yep, the SF E2L original 45 lumes started the SF for me....is absolutley awesome, especially with 17670......one of SF greatest designs
