Friggin' MORE COWBELL!!!
I got the light today and promptly attached it to my helmet! I took a few pics for your viewing pleasure.

For those concerned about whether it will fit the old PASGT as well as the ACH and MICH, I can confirm it works fine with the PASGT. I do not have any way to measure lumens. Sorry.

I would have prefered a pull-to-unlock toggle switch to activate white light or some other fail-safe, but...maybe in a later revision.

Pressing the center button changes the brightness on both white and blue mode.

Hey!

Not as of yet...but SF did tell me that a MOLLE adapter would be available in August, if I recall correctly. So...it *might* be available in January of '07? :)

i'm still so against the whole IF thing....

its just asking for other militarys/terrorists to come up with a blinking IF LED to avoid getting shot @...

unless i'm missing something?

We still have trouble getting IFF to work properly on million dollar airplanes and with missile systems. I think you have a point.

It isn't something you depend fully on, but it is an added layer of safety to avoid excessive friendly fire. Most terrorists aren't really organized and using US kit bought online would probably be a better way to blend in...

IR markers and beacons have been used a long time so this isn't something new.

I was looking more carefully at the IFF beacon last night and it emits a very, very slight red glow when lit. If you're looking from a couple of feet away, you won't see it though.

they may not buy a US kit... but IR LED's are really cheap... and to make one blink is easy as pie... i'm just saying if they are willing to look online to make IED's... there going to look online of how to get a soldier to second guess his target @ night...

IF was cool a while ago... but now is not the time to be using them for these tasks... it'll just even more confusion on the battle field...

I am in the Army so i'm not completely talking about of my you know what :D

yeah... the IR LED flashlight that Surefire sells also emits a small amount of red light out of it @ close range... i believe its pretty typical of some IF Led's...

Back on topic: Although I could use a MOLLE attachment, I'd be interested in another type of civilian mount at some point. It could be a backpack strap or hat brim type of thing. I can dream, can't I? I really liked the way you can flip up/down the light when mounted on your chest/armor; it'd be great for hands free operation. :candle: Actually, I wish SF came out with a real headlamp.

Wow...two things I just noticed...well...one, I noticed last night and one just now.

I can see a way to attach this to a baseball cap, but it would require modification of the cap. Basically, you'd have to stitch a "lip" for the mount to grab onto on the outside and inside of the hat. Some thick plastic would work, but may not be very comfortable. The pieces would only need to be a couple of inches long.

Second...my light doesn't "flip" anywhere! You are right though...I remember seeing it flip around at SHOT -- this one will not! Maybe a "design revision"...:rolleyes: If they did remove that functionalilty, that would be stupid...makes it a lot less versatile.

I'm thinking of the full US kit with iFF, weapons and other gear... They are organized, but not at a very high level compared to military professionals.. (yet...)

The IR iFF is just an additional tool to avoid friendly fire, most troops would rely on knowledge of where your mates are, how possible enemies behave and a lot of other factors. Just because somebody has an IR beacon doesn't mean you won't fire at him if other things suggest he's an enemy..

Back on topic: (my bad for the OT rambling..) It looks neat and is probably great for medics and good for quite a few other specialist troops.

not really a conventional headlamp, but soldiers rarely need that..

:awman: That was one of the things that made it so nice as a chest-mounted light. Does it have a locking mechanism somewhere? Or maybe it rotates only when using the chest mount (is it different?, I don't remember).
 
SF confirmed today that the MOLLE mount is the swivel type. They also indicated that production on that is "on hold indefinitely". :rolleyes:
