Surefire LED conv for G2?

I've ran a regular Q5 Cree dropin in a G2 for a few months and never had problems with it. A guy at work has been doing the same for over a year and trust me.. his G2 gets used alot. I've watched him leave it on for several hours trying to drain his RCR123's.

the heat isn't as big of an issue as it's made out to be, espicially for intermittant use (less than 5 minutes at a time).

My uses: Intermittent use such as using it to look in a closet and not wake up the kids. I don't normally have a reason to run the light for a long time but I would if there was some kind of emergency in which I had to. I think I would like a more focused beam as opposed to side spill. Rechargable batteries like Energizer E2's or cr123's if possible. With rechargables I don't worry about runtime as much so if I can get rechargable cr123 and use it in a standard G2 that would be awesome. I would like something small enough to EDC.

I don't remember any current gen LED drop-ins that have an output of lower then 60 lumen(not including multimode drop-ins or tailcaps). As long as the accepted voltage for the drop-in is above 8.4v, you can use 2 RCR123s(rechargeable CR123s) with it. If you want to use 3 RCR123, look at drop-ins that can take over 12.6v.

I'm guessing around $65 or less for a new light? CR123 batteries too?

Low output and long runtime usually go hand in hand. A high output light with the capability to run at a lower output should work. Maybe something like the Fenix PD20 or Nitecore EX10 could work

I have twwo Surefire G2 lights and a Streamlight TwinTask light. My G2s eat up batteries. My TwinTask is nice because it has both bulbs in it. I am thinking about upgrading both G2s to LED or selling them and going with just the TwinTask. What to do, what to do? I also see Lowe's selling the G2 with the LED in it. Should I buy that and keep the G2's stock? The G2 at Lowe's are $65. Can I upgrade the G2s (both) for that amount?

this thread is jumping around from the origional intent of the OP given the criteria listed in the origional post IMO.
whitefeather, the best thing you can do is to take the Survey Link about purchasing a flashlight. it will help you define what you are looking for, what the purpose of a light is for you, and what is important for you.
after you have taken the survey you can post the results and you will get responses that will help in stead of confuse you (not that the responses you have gotten so far aren't good but i think my previous post confused you). i think they would become more relivent to your needs.
in order for us to be more helpful we need to know more about you and those needs.

Inexpensive is the key to batteries for me. Finish choice is not a big deal either. I really like the Inova X-1 but it is too slick/slippery for me when wearing gloves. Other than that it is perfect.

I look at the G2 as a tactical flashlight. I think I am basically looking for the best quality house flashlight. I am also going to be looking for a red bulbed light for nighttime viewing of my tarantulas.

I have been EDC-ing my G2LED for about a month now, and have reverted to leaving it in my laptop bag when I have my laptop with me. While it is EDC-able, I have found that it is not as small as I would like in an EDC-able light and feel that a smaller E series SF light with an LF HOLA would be a better alternative.

because your criteria has now shifted away from the g2 completely i will disregard the mention of it from here on (not) and yet stay within the budget origionally imposed.
i like a top shelf "house" light to be able to tailstand but it's not a show stopper. yet battery expense is another concern. it would also be nice if there were an anti roll design. i don't think the t1 offers these features.
the nitecore d10 is worth a look. you can't go wrong with the aa batteries (cheap and easey to find) and you can get some nice rechargables most anywhere.
i can't recommend fenix in your case because for me they are too slippery even without gloves.
i'm kinda jonesing for the nitecore ndi myself but it's about 20 bucks over the prescribed budget. still selfbuilts review of it is hard to ignore. if that light is his edc light then that speaks volums about the light.

I got a PM about some inexpensive drop ins for the G2. I may do that and then pick up the Inova in a couple of weeks. I may wait a couple more weeks until my tax return comes and ask the boss if she will let me get a good light with some of th money.

I'm gonna do a zombie thread revival here. My question is will something like the malkoff with the brass housing to serve as a heat sink eliminate the issue of dropping a LED conversion into a polymer body/bezel? Or will the issue remain?

the malkoff m60L and LL have no overheating issues with polymer bodies, and they are the BEST drop-in upgrades you can make on a G2 surefire host...i have both and speak from real practical use...

The OP should know that he can safely use a Surefire P60L lamp module in a Nitrolon bezeled G2 safely for prolonged period of use without fear of damaging the LED. Unfortunately the thermal protection will dial down the output after a period of approximately 10 minutes to what he may find an unacceptable level of output from its initial 80 lumens. Surefire quickly realised this and equipped all P60L equipped G2's with aluminum bezels which help dissipate heat and protect the LED. If memory serves me correctly the initial output only drops from 80 to 70 lumens in aluminum bezeled G2's after prolonged use.:twothumbs
