surefire p60

could anyone tell me how long the p60 lamp in a surefire g2 is likely to last before it needs replaced after burning out?

I have yet to replace one in any of my lights, my oldest bulb has between 20 and 25 sets of batteries thru it. The only P60 LA I ever burnt out was because I mistakenly put in my C3 (instant flash). I have even dropped some of my lights, and still never had 1 fail. There have been people that have had them with premature failures, that is why on all of my backup lamps, I put them thru 1 battery change, before putting them in a spares carrier.

This brings up a question for me that I have been unsure of.

For your oldest bulb, has it gradually decreased in brightness, even with new batteries, or does it still seem as good as new?

I haven't had any P60 long enough to be able to make my own judgement on that, so any info you have would be appreciated :)

I guess I've never noticed if it has diminished or not, I'll have to compare side by side to one of my newer ones and let you know.

The general opinion seems to be that SureFire incandescent lamps such as the P60 have a lifespan of 25-30 hours.
However, there is little evidence that this is a limiting figure - it's not as if there are loads of reports of bulbs dieing of old ago at about 25-30 hours.
The opposite appears to be the case with people reporting that their incandescent bulbs last far longer.

SureFire designs and builds its incandescent lamps with a particular emphasis on durability and lifespan. This can be seen as compromising output but for the uses of SureFires, durability and lifespan are important characteristics given the heavy use and tough lifes people demand of them.

I've had my p60 for over 35 hours of battery use, and it has never burnt out. I however now bought a cree r2, and retired the p60 as a backup.

I did a side-by-side comparision last night between my oldest P60 and newest P60, and with my uncalabrated eyes I didn't see a whole lot of differance between the two. The newer one seemed the be a little whiter but not really brighter, when I pointed them 180° apart, it didn't look much different to me.

Thanks for the comparison. It's actually made quite a bit of difference. I always assumed that an incan lamp, even a known good quality one like the P60, was deteriating right from the start. If a 20+ hour lamp seems more or less like a new lamp, for me it makes a stock P60 light much more of a user than just a backup type light.

I do have incan rechargeable options, (Lumens factory 3.7v lamps, 17670 batteries) but I just really like the ease and simplicity of P60, 2 primaries, stock light like a 6P. It makes a great combo, which is probably why Surefire sell it that way I suppose!
