Surefire Variances Question

Good day,

I just moved up from the 6p/6Z/G2 series (with P61 lamps) to a 9P with the P91 upgrade.

What I have found is that my 6P will throw a beam farther and tighter than my 6Z or the 9P.

I guess I had expected the 9P to blow the P61 away. Just the opposite, the 9P is a much wider and appears less intense. I can spotlight trees 50-75 yrds away with my 6P, and while the 9P illuminates them, just not the same.

Sorry I don'nt know light-speak enough, and I hope I am making sense.

Guess the base question is, are there variances in the reflectors that could explain this? Even 2 of my P61's have a good bit of variance. On a wall 18 ft away, one will be maybe 2' across and intense, the other 3' and apparently less intense.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've just never done a side by side til now.

Welcome to CPF!

While there are variances, I believe what you are seeing is not uncommon. The reflector diameters are the same so a larger or longer filament that has a higher output will create a larger beam rather than a more intense one.
Additionally, the beams are individually focused for each combination of reflector and filament so any variation is bound to be multiplied I guess.

I'm not a fan of the P90/P91 over the P61 for the reason you have outlined.

I have about 10 P60's, all throw a different style of beam, from flood like to near spot like.

Generally, the P91 will not out throw a P90 (or even a P60/61) but will emit more light, although I think the P91 is overkill in relation to run time.

While I don't have a P90 or P91 at hand right now I could imagine a thicker or longer filament also contributing to a different beam shape, this added to what Al said could explain what you experienced. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Beamshape and throw is always a combination of filament size, filament thickness, filament shape, size of reflector and degree of reflector - hope to not have forgotten something. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif The smallest differences in these factors create huge differences in the end. Best example are also the MN15 and MN16 lamp assemblies compared to the N2. While the MN15 is compareable in output to the N2 the beamshape and throw is completely different, even if used in the same reflector.
