Survival torch

Hi all,

Relatively new to all this and the forums. I've found some great threads so far which recommend some expensive torches.

i need a torch that has an tactical edge, can handle knocks, various settings, med / high , under two hundred lumens and less then fifty quid. Also it needs to use AA or aaa bateries as these are widely available in any store.

after what I've read I'm thinking of the fenix ld22. Any other recommendations?

What do you mean by "tactical edge"?

I'm going to assume your looking for a light that runs on 2xAA batteries?

The Fenix LD22 seems to be quite popular, I've had the LD20 (older version) for 18+ months now and its been ducktaped to bicycle handlebars, dropped on concrete, left in the sun, dunked in lakes etc and its still working great. IIRC (and someone will correct me if I'm wrong), the LD22 has mode memory- the light will come on in the last setting used. Personally, I prefer the LD20 - able to tighten the head for full brightness or loosen 1/4 turn for lowest mode.

An alternative is the EagleTac D25A2 clicky or the Foursevens Quark Pro QP2A.

I'll also put a vote in for a Quark AA or Eagletac D25A Clicky, but in single cell versions.

I think runtime is the most important thing a survival light and having a 400hr/AA (Quark XPG) moonlight mode can really make a battery go a heck of a long way. Both lights also have a good selection of other battery conserving lows, for when moonlight isn't enough. Moonlight also allows you scavenge batts that don't have enough to power higher lumen lights or other electrical devices.

I like single cells since it more likely you will be carrying the light on your person (only good light is the one you have with you) and it gives you a lot more scavenging options, including using AAAs and 9V (6xAAAAs) by using $$ bills and tinfoil as spacers.

Thanks for the advice both. I actually went for all three and love the moonlight mode.
