Switching out the Diode on a Green pointer?

Hey, I've been looking around here and decided to register. Some great information here!

Now, my question.
Can I take my circutry from my old-style leadlight, turn down the current, and install one of these?

Is this possible? And if so, will I end up smoking the MCA or something else inside the laser?

I've done the stage 1 and 2 mods to my pointer, and am tempted to do the resistor mod, but before I do it, I want to know, if that one craps out on me, can I buy one of these and solder it in and be set? With possibly more output?

well, you can. The 200 I believe is the wattage standard in the regular pointers. The misleading part is that the lasers are VERY ineffecient - If you have a 500mw diode, there's a good chance you'll get maybe 60mw output. *with really decent crystals*
Short answer - YES, if you were to mess something up, you can get another diode, sure.
Depending on what you did with the resistor mod, more than likely you'll not likely break anything unless like in my case, your soldering sucks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I need to get a new driver board. The one I have works, but if I could take a pic to show you what a shoddy soldering job I did, you'd point and laugh!
The MCA's = I don't know what would happen if you burnt them out, however getting a better set isn't exactly a bad idea if you're going to up the output. Generally however, it's been my experience that the stocks will handle mostly whatever the stock diode can put out. Just make sure your duty cycle is enough that if you feel it heating up somewhat, that you give it a chance to cool.

The first link you posted doesn't work unfortunatly, however again the second one is I believe a standard diode. Try for a 300 or 350 one, make sure it's 5.6mm diode though. 9mm will NOT fit without a caseish mod too.

The first link is diodes from Z-bolt, they are the standard 200mw also.

Lol - operating current 210ma - mines at 550ma. I think mine is a 350mw though as it has a red mark on the bottom of the diode - can anyone confirm this as an identifying feature? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I've heard bare diodes are susceptible to ESD Electro Static Discharge. Zap and it is dead. That's what I've heard.

On my old diode I have a red mark too, and my old laser did 80-100mW with 550-600mA...
 
Ah it was sbk, I couldn't remember who had mentioned about the red mark on the bottom of the diode...cheers.

But I don't get the 9mm bit - mines a 5.6mm can...but you maybe right the red dot may be a unique way of telling the difference between diodes - mine may well be a 350mw.

When I say my laser I have many of them scattered all over the house.

The diode with the red mark is on a 5mw from abeland - just voided my warranty there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The atlasnova seem to be normal leadlights but on comparing the two the leadlight looks like it was thrown together with dodgy soldering/scratches all over the brass diode. Whereas the Atlasnova is extremely good build quality with nice shiny new parts...very nice. The downside is that mine is at 550ma and still can't get past 15mw. Theres something in there limting the output I'm sure of it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Hi everyone...just joined up after many months of reading...
First off ..I think this is the best laser / light forum out there..
anyhow..just wanted to comment that I have seen this on quite a few of them ..seems the grin lens or lenses between the diode and MCA sometimes are damaged , I have looked at them under a microscope and found microcracks in them, and also found a few that look like they were cooked (melted spot in the center , Maybe these slipped by production ? I dont know..and these were new pointers too...OBTW I like the red dot diodes. Happy Holidays
