I've just spotted the new Philips LED edison-base lamps at my local Home Depot. They have a 40w and a 60w equivalent. The 40w (450 lumen) bulb is shaped like previous Sylvania and EcoSmart LED bulbs, and the 60w is the one that looks like the alien head from War of the Worlds. I snagged the 40w for $22. The 60w was going for $55  so I passed it by.

The 40w lamp has a visible yellow phosphor blob under the frosted globe, about the size of a half-dollar coin. The bulb has a very incandescent look to it when running. Because of the way that the phosphor layer is oriented inside the lamp, there's a bright hotspot at the top of the bulb. Some of the light is distributed across the rest of the globe by the diffused coating. This pattern works well in a reading lamp but might not be suited for a table lamp as it will throw a disproportionate amount of the light towards the ceiling.

Overall I think it's a step forward for Philips.

Mods, are you able to change the thread title from Sylvania to Philips? Pretty please?

This seem to be an old thread recovered from CPFs crash. The replies seem to be lost.

It is the one on the far right. The price has dropped to $25 in the US and $30 in Canada.

That would be the 2nd from the left. Discontinued. Philips have replaced it with a 9W dimmible (no yellow blob 3rd from left} and a 6W non-dimmible (with the yellow blob - sold out) bulbs.
