All I can say is..........GOoOleeeeeeeee. I posted last week asking about a Mag mod. Finally decided to just buy the Terralux for $26.95 because it was the most simple thing to do. Just for giggles. I didn't really think it would be anything spectacular. Was I wrong. WOW. Man this thing made my 3-D cell spit sunlight. Unbelievable. I'm just stunned at the light it produces. If Mag Industries would make these stock instead of the incandescent fireflies they currently use they would actually be competitive. In my opinion the only thing Mag has going for it is the quality of the body, not the light produced. Until now. If you are considering the Terralux........run to the computer and order now, you'll thank me. I haven't been this impressed since I got my Olight T20.

I was thinking about getting in a TeraLux for my 2D but I heard its not as bright as the 3D. With D's so common I just wish they'd push it harder instead of reducing the output to have about the same runtime as the 3D's. Still may get it though. If it had the same type of boost cuircuit that's in Lowes TaskForce 3W 2C I'd get it in a heart beat but I think it's driven less than the TF3W wich is 1.1A at about 2.75V on ave.

I agree, its an awesome drop in for the money, however I've heard the heatshrink isn't that efficient so I try not to run it for too long. Yup this will now be my present to any of my friends for family that want a bright lite!

(still trying to get on the Malkoff wagon:D)

I had the Terralux in my 4D and while I thought it was a vast improvement over either the stock incan or MagLED, I think the Malkoff Devices drop-in is by far the best. My Terralux always fogged up the inside of the lens because the bulb got so hot...no such issues with the Malkoff. And yeah, I guess you can argue that the brightness difference isn't that much...but that really depends on how you gauge things. I personally think it's noticeably brighter. I had them run side by side to 2 of my buddies and the one who was a flashlight enthusiast like me said he "totally noticed" the difference and the other who isn't an enthusiast didn't think it was much of one. So again, I think it depends on how you gauge things.

With all that said, I do think that the Terralux is a very good product for the price and simplicity of installation.

Is this their latest version, the one with the K2 TFFC? I read somewhere that there is a recall on that LED. I hope the Terralux dropins aren't affected.

Yes this drop-in is definitely a lot brighter than you would think from the reviews. Not to take anything away from the Malkoff, but I was really surprised when I did my own custom mod with an SSC P4 U-bin and a Cree Q5, on an H22A heatsink, and ran them both at 1A, and was surprised that the TLE-6EX gave them a run, though they were still brighter. At 500ma, they were about the same, and that seems to be about what the Terralux pulls.

Yeah for those that run it for hours and hours, the heat could become and issue, but I think for the most part, the issues that came up before, Terralux has fixed.

I think this is the best bang for the buck drop in for the Mag. Doesn't mean I'm not going to work on a custom Quad... :D

Thx for the input:thumbsup: I have a 3D w/ the older k2 luxeon though, but it still seems bright to me! and its such a thrower.(I know there are better options out there, but yes for the money the terralux is choice!)

I got the TLE-6EXB for my 3D Mag and it flickers rapidly when the light is first turned on and then the flickering slows until the light has warmed up for about 30 seconds or so. It's a little annoying, so it is on the way back for a replacement. I'm hopeful that the replacement will work better, because once it was warmed up, TLE-6EXB with a sputtered reflector made for a really nice light.

I gave my GF a Mag 4C and a Terralux 6EX for Christmas. It's a nice setup. The beam is ringy when it's wide, but if it's narrowed down it produces a real tight super bright hotspot.

luxeon? and you call yourself a flashoholic? lol :naughty:

Over the past couple of years various attempts have been made to improve on the heat sinking abilities of the humble C&D size Maglites so they wont fry the Terralux drop ins.

Unfortunately the risk of your drop in failing or experiencing a rapid degradation in LED tint after a 5-10 minute run time remain a very real possibility. However, I've found that if you use an aluminum reflector with a Terralux module you appear to remove most of the problems people are complaining of.

In my case the module actually touches the inside of the cam on the back of the reflector enough to allow direct transference of heat. I suspect though even without the touching of the module to reflector surfaces that the very small tolerance around the module is allowing a pretty good thermal transfer due to metal-air-metal proximity.

I don't have any way of measuring the surface temp of the reflector but it always feels warm to the touch after running the Terralux for about an hour or so.

Could this be a partial answer to people who are concerned about thermal degradation of their Terralux units?

I have no doubt that the issues that Newbie had with the first unit that he got and reviewed did exists. I also worried that I might have an issue with my TLE-6EX when I ordered it, so I tested it right away. I didn't leave it on for hours, but I left it on for probably 40-60 min at least, I didn't see any degredation in color, and the drop-in has worked just fine ever since, I was also just using the standard reflector.

Yes it got hot, definitely. However I think the heat issue may be a bit overblown, and I'm sure they had quality control problems, but I think that's where the issues probably are that most people experience. I had another TLE-5EX module, that was EXTREMELY dim when I first received it, I thought this isn't any type of improvement over the standard Minimag bulb. Luckily I had ordered a few for some friends as well, put another one in, no problems. The replacement that Battery Junction sent out worked just fine, so I really think it's more a quality control issue, than the actual design. IMO as I said before, I think it's the best bang for the buck for a Mag, given the other designs that are out there.

I had just gotten a terralux tle-6exb for my red 2d maglite with 2 10000mah accupower low discharge d cells and it sure beats the standard magled by far. Its a great simple mod. Unlike some people on here who "collect" flashlights, i actually use mine for work on a daily basis. I was thinking on getting a tle-300, and a nice blue 4d maglite, although that might be overkill.

I love my 3C Maglite with the TerraLux dropin. It is bright. One extra thing is did was add a UCL. You cannot see it. I have not measure the light out but it is a fine light.
