I have an AA Mini Maglite and I just I tried the Nite ize Mini mag conversion for it. It left a lot to be desired.

I found some reviews of some of the other conversions (so I kind of knew what to expect for the Nite Ize one), but not one for this one:

TERRALUX MINISTAR TLE-5EX MINISTAR2 EXTREME LED:

It's supposed to put out 140 lumens. I just want it for the AA minimag I bought for my son which he never uses anyway. I like having a light in my car for when I drop something on the floormats (I have black carpet). I realize the advertised 140 lumens may be an overestimate, but this would likely have a lot of flood, and that's what I want. The Nite Ize conversion just doesn't crank out enough light.

I looked at some cheap lights, but to buy a decent one would cost me at least as much as this conversion. Anyone try this one yet? Is it worthwhile?

I did some more digging - it seems the rated 140 lumens is an actual 90-100 lumens.

I added up the price + shipping of the LED and the tail switch - and just decided to pick up another Coleman Max for $26 at Wal-Mart. No conversions, the output will be brighter, and it's probably a better light than the converted minimag.

I'll keep the $5 Nite Ize conversion in it and just leave it as is.

Good choice. The minimag mods like this are good overall, but only if you really want to keep using the host.

For the money, it's often better just to get a better light.

Still, minimag mods are pretty fun.

Well, I did just order a fullsize maglight conversion that should be very very bright based on the reviews of others here. It shipped from hong kong today - so I should get it tomorrow. Had others not talked about it here, I do not think I would have given it a 2nd look.

I own the terralux ministar extreme module for my camo 2aa and my maglite xl100 easily meets and beats it at an advertised 83 lumens. Then my icon outdoes it easily at 100 lumens. I would say the module is maybe 70-maybe 80lumens.

Then again it is fun to take something and upgrade it as I am totally happy with it. If you are looking for something with more of a flood as tle5ex is a very concentrated beam to keep it bright, I would choose the xl100 as you can get it for 30 shipped on ebay right now and has all the modes you will ever need with great looks, did i mention flood.

Again it is worth the money but do not expect 140 lumens, as its definitely not anywhere near 100lumens. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Yes I was hoping it had a lot of flood. So, thanks for the info.

And yes, it is kinda fun to mod. I did the night IDE upgrade, and it gave me the feeling of accomplishing something.

I got the Nite-Ize mini-mag conversion 4 or 5 years ago. 2 of them actually. Better than the original bulb and a novelty at the time. i had to do a quick vehicle inspection in a dark barn every morning and it was handy. Now I have one with Energizer lithiums in the center console of both cars. Not the best of lights but a great thing to know it's there in the off chance of an emergency. And battery life with the lithium batteries they should be good to go. I check them about every 3 months.
