i have two terralux modules. the led's are not identical. has terralux switched away from the ssc p4? in my opinion this is a big mistake. if they went to the k2 which is what i suspect (for better heat tolerance) then we lost some efficency didnt we?

not all my mag led's are the same, althought i bought most on black friday. but i heard rumor (on cpf of course) they have the rebel 60 in them. can this also be swapped to the ssc p4. if so, it doesnt matter to me much, but i am certainly not buying another terralux and then modding it with the led i was supposing it came with!

Yeah, terralux is using luxeon K2s now instead of seoul P4s. My understanding is the same as your, that they change LEDs because the K2s are more heat tolerant. They are running their maglite drop-ins at the edge of burning up and there were some problems with the early ones if I remember correctly. With the LED swap, they swapped out for a less efficient LED, but one that would be more reliable and produce similar output.

The new rebel mags; I just don't like them. I'm sure if you really wanted to, you could replace the rebel with a seoul P4, but I think it'd be better to get a heatsink and do a proper mod with the driver (yes, maglites driver) epoxied to the bottom of the heatsink or to the battery tube. These new rebel mags; I just don't like them. At least with the luxeon III maglites, you could give the magled module to someone, sell it, or use it in other lights. These new maglites, you can do anything with. The switch is shorter and some of the internals have changed. You can't use the reflector with anything but them alone, and you can't use parts from other maglites.

I kinda wonder if this is their way of saying "no drop-ins for you". The new rebel is nice, I do like the warm tint, but other then that, I like the luxeon III maglites better. They're more flexible and the only thing different from the incan maglites is the bulb. I wish they would've just change the luxeon with the rebel and kept their PR style bulb.

The K2s Terralux uses are the newer K2-TFFCs, which have comparable efficiency to the SSC-P4 and the Cree-XRE.

really. i thought they were less efficent. thats good to know, especially cause they swamboozled me with it. i thought i ordered a sscp4 model. they didnt even mention k2. warmer tint, i'll give it that. we just compared them both and the 2d is the k2, about as bright as the 3d with the p4. 3d has stippled reflector which will lose you 3% or so but come on, its got more juice and is suppose to be a touch brighter on the same led isnt it? anyways, kudos the the k2 i suppose.
