Testing a battery with multimeter

DC voltage, 20V setting.

On a non-autoranging multimeter, if you are testing an unknown voltage always start at the highest voltage setting and then step down to the next lower only if the reading is below the high end of the lower range.
 
Set the meter to DC volts and something above 5v. The symbol for DC volts is a curved line. The symbol for AC volts is a solid line over a dashed line.

Cells are DC, so that's the only one you need.




Also, on that meter, there are test leads.

There are three holes along the bottom of the front face of the meter.

Put the RED one on the far right, and the BLACK on right next to it in the middle hole.


On the cell, the red goes on the positive (+) and the black goes on the negative (-) end of the cell.

You've got that around the wrong way. DC is a solid line over a dashed line.

Whew...glad you pointed that out. I can't tell you how many times I've attempted to test AC voltage on a DC battery, simply because I was in a hurry and forgot to hit the MODE button on the multimeter.

It's a Klein. I'm used to working with analog sweep stuff rather than this digital autoranging deal...it's taking some getting used to.
