The 4.5V Charge testing thread (because you asked)

Well you didnt ask, but you want to know right?
Charging li-ion to 4.5V. How about it.
UNSAFE PROCEDURE THAT WILL DAMAGE YOUR CELLS. Dont try this at home.

how long would it last staying at 4.5v ?
What cell items will survive one time, 10 times, even 2 years, being charged to 4.5V?
How does that effect capacity?
How bad will the cell become?
Will it build up gas internally?
Will it properly disconnect when it does?
What will happen when the cell becomes bad?
Which Brands can survive?

Charging above 4.2V will offer negligible to no extra stored capacity at all, at the cost of greatly reduced lifespan in best case (small overshoot) and venting and/or explosion in worst case.

Some actually purposely charge to 4.1V instead of 4.2V to improve lifespan at the cost of approx 5% of lost stored capacity. Seeking towards this direction is much more interesting IMO.

BTW where are your results ???

i think we need a Poll

1) Capacity let the cells DIE, just give me power now, suffer later.
2) Longevity, I need the cell to last, willing to sacrafice some capacity.
3) I want Neither, I dont know why I am answering this poll
4) Cant we just blow something up, and skip to the good stuff?

Yes I think we all want more power and capacity but as I said charging beyond 4.2V doesn't give you more. People need to understand once you reach that point no matter how higher you go in termination voltage the cell just doesn't accept any more mAh. But it WILL remember the bad treatment.

There's a reason why chargers stop at 4.2V and IMO it isn't a very conservative figure already.
