The "Cube"
I just recently finished a quad Cree light using 2" square tubing as a housing.
I mounted the LED's on a piece of 1/4" flat stock cut to fit the housing's interior dimensions. It was then drilled and screwed to the housing from the outside.
I then got some memory heatsinks and mounted them to the outside of the tubing where the bolts were mounted. They were AA'd to the housing to maximize heat transfer.
In the back I used threaded stand off's epoxy puttied to the corners so I could bolt the back shut. I had to cut a relief into the rear cover around the edge to make room for a gasket so it would stay put.
I then mounted it to an old Nightrider mount.
The lenses are of course Ledil CRS series. 2 Oval pattern and 1 Soft spot and 1 diffused spot. Q5's are used as LED's, should get about 800lm total w/ optic losses figured in.
I used a 17 cell AA 2650mah pack I made and ran them through a 1000ma 3023 driver from LED supply. The switch is from Digikey.
Power cord is a Trail tech style from batteryspace.com
The light has some serious punch in the woods, beam shots will follow shortly. The beam pattern is wide for peripheral but yet still has some decent throw up front.
I realize the MCE will eclipse this for compactness but I like the ability to personalize the beam pattern and am working on an MCE right now, but this baby will keep me going for a few months until the MCE is done.
I don't have easy access to a machine shop so this was my way off making a good solid light that could take a beating, was fairly lightweight and had some serious power on fast, twisty single track

Re: The "Cube"

That's a nice looking light! Any thoughts on how well the heatsinking is working out, or how the optics selection is working out?

I built a quad Cree dynamo light last February, and am already thinking about a MC-E replacement. <..sigh..> Fortunately, I've got another bike that could use a new headlight.

I'm using the Ledil smooth spot lens on my light, and it's working pretty well for road use. Sometimes I think it might be good to use an optic with a tighter beam in order to put more light far in front of the bike, and less shining on the road right in front of me.

Re: The "Cube"

Steve, the heat sinking works well. With a few rides in I can say that while moving outside the light stays cool. If you let it sit indoors it will get hot, including the fins.
The optics have been messed around with but I came back to the current setup.
I get a nice wide fill around me and some good fill up front.
Coupled with my Dual Q5 helmet light I get quite a nice bit of real estate lit up.
As stated, I am also building an MCE setup for my helmet and maybe for the bars as well.
The only drawback to this quad setup is the battery pack is starting to get on the large size, 17 AA cells. I needed a higher rated charger and it almost doesn't fit the battery bag I have.

I believe I got the tubing and flat stock from OnlineMetals.com.
You can get them in 1 ft increments and they have a great selection of different gauges and dimensions. Prices are good also.
