I have never played with a Royal Blue Luxeon, much less a 5-watt example. After all, what self-respecting Luxeon goes around rating its brightness in milliwatts? We want Lumens!

And so it was with quite a bit of curiosity, along with some trepidation, that I slit open the little blister pack containing a 5-watt Royal Blue Side Emitter received just today from Lambda.

I mounted it on a 2C NexStar that I had already prepared for the RB's arrival, slid in a patented (not really) MR Bulk rubberized rattle-free 3x123 holder, and stood it up next to its 5-watt White SE fraternal twin fer pitcher takin':

Bet you can't guess which is which, heh heh.

But appearances can be remarkably deceiving, especially when the soft-touch clickies on their tailcaps were depressed:

BOOM! Holy Burnin' Eyeballs! It completely dominated its white-beamed brother, and after a few staring moments my eyes started to ache.

I then tried light metering it, but to my amazement the blacklight-beamed Black Needle failed to register anything. At all.

So I crept closer and closer, narrowing the original 39.37-inch measured gap until I was like six inches away, when suddenly the gauge numbers started to race upwards, and the last number I saw was in 5,000+ lux region before I shut her down.

The effects of the Royal Blue Luxeon are already well-documented in this thread by Lambda so there's no need to get into it here, but I'm sure this ghostly blue beam does something nasty to the eyes eventually, even when nothing registers on the meter.

No wonder they rate them in milliwatts; they have to warn us somehow.

The Black Needle Lives!

Mr. B, even the picture hurts the eyes!

Looks like the Nextstar does a great job of focusing the beam. Very nice pics; wish my camera was that good.

You'll have to take it outside, as I found the RB HD you sent me to take on an almost white light look. Anything up close was vivid blue, but in the distance, things lit up pretty good, and anything that is florescent stands right out.

With some amber shooting glasses you'll have a powerful CSI portable lab. Get ready for your work buddies to wrestle for that light!

Are you going to use it to visually stun possible suspects?

Nice! Even though the RBs are rated with such "low" light output, they always seem to dominate your vision. Even in a well lit room, everything takes on a slight blue cast when you fire one of those up.

I can't wait for more time and fundage to try a 1W SE in a big reflector.

bah! that is beautiful. i called future yesterday for a rb 5w, and they said they wouldn't be in until January

lambda...got any more?

i am so depressed now...

The Alien Consortium continues to rattle me. They know I want a powerful 5W RB. They know I can't afford 9 bucks a load.

Why do they do this? I'll tell you why. I was the first one to notice the ModMen had no fingerprints. Some of these creatures roam the hills of the Arkansas river. They can be easily identified by RB's because aliens flouresce.

Here is their plan: They will force me to buy one of their 5W RB machines. I won't be able to afford the batteries but I will buy them anyway. I won't be able to make my house note and then be forced to become a motivational speaker and live in a van down by the river. Then they will have me. I will be reprogrammed to advocate their goals and explain why darell really isn't off-topic.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Icebreak,

I don't even believe that's possible under interrogation by Mr. Bulk with a Black SpaceNeedle illuminating your face. The only reason we came to this planet is to observe Darell; dang, did I say that out loud?

Lambda - I am using an old Mavica which I hope will keep running forever, they don't make'em like that any more.

Icebreak - you don't know me...I am in the alien witness protection program.

Icebreak...it's true, I feel it also. I've been watching for some time now. I believe that by merely observing the pictorial representation of Mr. Bulk's "5w Cyan NexNeedle" in a Brinkmann 2C housing somehow "infected" me with the "virus".

I actually almost purchased one from Mr. Bulk, but the "virus" hadn't fully implemented itself and I still had some sensory capabilities. We discussed runtime, practicality and such and I "backed off the purchase", BUT I STILL WANT ONE! (The virus did "force" me to purchase a 1w LS in the Brinkmann LX housing though!)

Now I think the pictorial representation of the "Black Needle" has somehow triggered a new phase of mutation to the "5w Cyan NexNeedle" virus...It hurts bad, I want one, and I just can't have one at the momment...It's got to be some type of conspiracy taking place...Help us!!

I used a 5 watt cyan to shine in my Reef Tank. Wow, a lot of the corals really lit up! I bet the Royal blue would be great for this. When Lumileds gets things going, I am sure Luxeons will be a hot commodity in the Aquarium buisness.

Sigman, I just didn't believe you. If you stare at the bright blue spot for a few seconds it begins to pulsate its' size and intensity. What have I done?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">You either fried the ol' eyeballs or triggered the dormant ModMen genes.

For dormant genes....I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to disclose that solution.

I can't wait to get my hands on that!

Excellent! After seeing this, I can't wait to finish my royal blue 5W mod. Do you find that it makes lots of things glow pretty buck like a blacklight?

Catdaddy, patience is a virtue...

Slick, "glow pretty BUCK"??? What the heck does that mean?

I recently mentioned how great my Direct Drive Blaster with the RB LS is. I got Wayne to put it in to charge up my glow powder, so I call it my Glow Blaster. I can imagine how great the 5W is. It's become one of my best "fun" lights. I want lambda to bulid me a BB with a 1w, but he needs me to send him the LS 1st. Anyone have one they want to sell?? TX

Dang, this is quite a little playhouse you modders set up. If I'd known about this sooner, I might've reported you to the proper authorities

I notice a lot of cool one-off mods. For example, the black needle. As you might imagine, I now covet many of them. Do they usually turn into mods-for-sale? I imagine there aren't too many RB 5-watt side-emitter LSs out there yet, but when there are ...
