That is an awesome light that will go up in value over the years! Buy it!

18650 will give it the max output. It is just one level since there's no circuitry to regulate how much power goes to the led. It's just as much power as the battery can give and hence why it's limited to just one 18650. Any larger battery or higher voltage setup and it will kill the led. With that being said, you can run it with smaller batteries for reduced output but at least you would have options.

The reflector used in the light is larger than a typical P60 setup, so it will have a narrower beam and thus throw further. I really do like this setup and I've always wanted to pick up one of these but I know that I wouldn't use it very much. For what I do mostly, camping and backpacking, this is not an ideal setup, but I can see this as a VERY useful light for search and tactical scenarios.

By far and away my favorite single level light. I have the original M2-50 neutral as well as an XML that was upgraded by Tom (at Oveready).

It is BRIGHT, more throw than a P60 and I haven't had it get too hot (like smaller BRIGHT lights). Yes 1x18650 only.

Was going to reply again, but wanted ElectronGuru to have "the final word". What I wanted to add was "and you can stick it in your back pocket".

We recently had someone over, a plumber, who had his choice of everything in the store (including both new HDS models). He was looking for a simple brute force setup and walked out with one of these heads on an HA 6P body and ZR in the tail.

The M2 DD is not technical or sophisticated, but it blows away most everything else in the same size/battery class.
