Thor - different versions

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

This is my first post on this website. Yesterday, the Thor 10 million candlepower spotlight I ordered from Northern Tool arrived. It replaced the one that my wife got me for Christmas from Dunham's. I returned the original to Dunhams for a refund, as it was a very close copy to the Thor 10 Million model, but it was lower quality, and not the same. In early November, Dunham's had the Thor 10 Million model spotlights in both yellow and camo, on sale for $69.99, marked down from $79.99. A week later when my wife went to Dunham's to get me one for Christmas, they were out of the yellow and camo colored units, and had a black 10 million candlepower spotlight that looked very much like the Thor 10 Million. This black 10 million candlepower spotlight had a shallower reflector that gave more of a flood light than a spotlight. It also had two 4 amp batteries instead of the Thor's 7 amp batteries. To those not real familiar with the Thor 10 Million, and without comparing them side-by-side, one could be fooled by this lower quality look alike. I bought my Thor 10 Million online from Northern Tool for $39.99 plus $10+ shipping, so I had just over $50 into it. Last night I stopped into a local store that sells a line of "GRIP" cheap tools and other products under that name. I hadn't been in there for two weeks. Sitting on the shelf were several Thor 10 Million candlepower spotlights in yellow at $39.99 each! It didn't say Thor on the box, as my Northern Tool spotlight didn't say "Thor"; they each carried the name of "their" own brand, "Northern Tool" or "Grip". They were the same Thor units with the exception of the reflector. My Northern Tool model had a perfect metal reflector. The "Grip" model appeared to have a reflector with a flash chromed, (maybe even plastic), reflector, that wasn't flawless like a piece of highly polished metal. Everything else on the "Grip" model appeared to be the same as mine and the "Thor" 10 Million candlepower spotlight.
So, if you are going to buy a "Thor" 10 Million, make sure that it is the "Thor," and that it has the highly polished metal reflector.
It's a nice light for $39.99, but I think $69.99 is a little high. I have several other spotlights that are 3 million candlepower or less that appear to put out as good or better a focused beam as my Thor 10 Million. Perhaps if the Thor could be focused better or even adjustable, it would improve it.

...also speaking of different versions, I can't wait for the 15mcp version to become available. It is shown on the cyclops web site (can't remember the full URL) and appears to have a huge relfector. It looks like it could be a fantastic base for an HID mod.
