I've never used the MM18vn so i can't say 100% but based on pictures and reviews i stand by my description : the MM18vn is like 2 separate lights - a very bright flooder and decent thrower. The TK75vnQ throws better than my K40vn (366k vs 360k lux) and puts out 4900 lumens over a large area.

I'm my opinion throw is more important than flood. I can make a throwy light work in a close-up situation, but i can't make a floody light work in a throwy situation

Very true. The only exception to this would be an XPG2 PDT in a large reflector. The resulting pencil beam and small spill make for a specialized light.

True; however, I believe the recommended options have an XML led. Am I wrong?

Yes the TK75vnQ recommend is XML2 U3 PDTc. Base is stock XML2 current boosted. You can get XML2 U4 which is brighter but doesn't throw as well. Then the Q70 uses XHP70 LEDs. XPG2 is not an option. I only pointed that out because of you saying you can usually make a thrower work for short distance but can't make a flooder throw. I agree. My point was throwers can be used close up by either using a lower level or their natural spill except in cases of an XPG2 PDT in a larger reflector giving it a pencil beam hence no spill making it not very useful for close in. Example my single mode direct drive M25C2vnT XPG2 PDTc does 775 kcd but has a very narrow beam. Aiming at a close object creates a lot of glare. However if i want to illuminate a target 100+ meters away it excels.
