Time for a throw flashlight but who king right now??

Since I have lots of AA eneloop I've purchase the iTP A6 Polestar a few years back. I've been very happy with this flood light but new its time for a new toy. I guess I am looking for something more powerful in a throw flash light now. What options do I have with AA battery's? Who the kind of throw these day? I don't mind changing battery types like to 18650 and if someone can recommend a good brand and charge for it that would be great.

I've came across Vinenguyen mod k40 and its looks like a monster. Is that the king of the hill right now?

If you want to stick with aa batteries the TK41 is supposed to have really good throw (as it should--- a single xm-l with a very large reflector). I wish I had one of those but I don't.

If you wanna have a really good thrower using 18650's right now I'd look at the Armytek Barracuda. It's a long format 2 18650 thrower. If you get that one get the newest version using an xm-l2 U3 emitter.

The vinhnguyen mods will be the best value for money right now at the very top end, either the K40 or TN31. The Firefoxes FF4 would be interesting to check out too, but it's HID rather than LED and uses 18650s.

If you want non-modded then the Niwalker BK-FA01 is the best reflector based stock LED light for throw atm. For AAs you would be more limited, with the TK41 probably still one of the best options.

If you do get into 18650s make sure you get good cells (but no need to overpay for certain brands) just be sure to get genuine Panasonic based cells and if possible with a good quality PCM. The Nitecore intellicharger i4 is probably the best deal on a charger right now from illumination-supply.

For aa bats I have the TK41 and the EA8. Both throw the same but I find myself grabbing the EA8 first. It has more UI options and while both take 8 aa bats the EA8 doesn't have the carrier to mess with but the 41 does. Can't go wrong with either though.

One of my brothers got very cross while using his crappy flashlight and tossed it all the way across the street and into the adjoining neighbor's wall. So .. I'd say he's the king of throw right now.

I agree on all that. I have both the Vinh TN31 and K40. Both will smoke any production made flashlight currently on the market. And I'm talking all the big boys like the Olight SR90 and 95 regardless of the emitter used. They won't even hold a candle to the Vinh TN31 or K40. If you want the best thrower for the money, contact Vinh and tell him you want one of his modded TN31 de-domed XM-L2 TN31 6.5 amps. Now it's not a flashlight you want to run on high for very long. But I can tell you this that even on level 3 or 4 it will easily beat a stock TN31 in throw. Level 6 is high. But the Vinh TN31 is putting out right at 500K. A stock first version TN31 puts out around 115K just so you know. And the 2nd version XM-L2 probably puts out around 125K. Vinh's TN31 is about 4 times that of the 2nd version TN31 to put that in perspective.

The Vinh TN31 I have will even out throw my big Power On Board 35watt HID. And that light has like a 6" diameter reflector and weighs 9lbs.

I'll dig my link up to show you to put things visually inperspective for you. I always say seeing is believing.

I might add I shined that light 1/2 mile up the highway a few nights ago and it easily lit up the highway like it was nothing to it.

With 18650's, the KING of throw, right now, is the DeftX from OMG Lumens, with over 900k cd. That uses an aspherical lens and Waivien light engine set-up.

Mash is working on a similar set-up as a DeftX clone.

OSTS has the TN31mb, which is reflector based, as a souped up TN31.


Vinh's stuff is not aspherical, and his TN31vn is stronger than the TN31mb, but with less run time and more heat...as he hot rods his lights to the Nth degree. His K40vn has less throw than his TN31vn, but has a fatter and more useful beam...while STILL out throwing almost everything out there with a reflector LED set-up.

So, the above stuff is ~ 400-500k cd or so, with the DeftX at over 900k cd, around double the next closest lights.

Dollar for dollar Vinh's TN31 or K40 is the way to go over the Deft-X which is around $700. You can buy a 500K TN31 from Vinh for around $180 shipped to your door. You could buy dang near 4 of them for what you pay for one Deft-X. And you got a lot more useable beam. Aspherical lenses after owning my fair share or just about useless pencil beams.

They were ALMOST too long in mine, but they WERE too FAT.

On the other hand, I've spoken with others who had theirs fit fine, so, either the cells vary in size, or, the light barrels do.
