I figure it is about time for another get together since everyone should be recovered from Cambria by now. It's starting to get dark earlier so lets start talking possible dates, where and what to eat. (BTW, Jim I have to get that recipe for the beans that you brought last time...those were fantastic.) If we want to have it at my house again, that should be okay, assuming its a date that I'll be home. So far weekends seem to have better turn outs so I would suggest a Saturday again.

Anyway, now that I got this started, anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers Patrick! I've been trolling CPF for about two weeks jonesing for another Bay Area get together...

Your house is fine by me. In regard to scheduling the day, I'm planning a move (to Hayward) in mid-November. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
I'll try my best to make whatever day it is, but the weekends around Nov 11 is almost definitely out for me. How about Halloween, we could really scare the heck out of the trick-or-treaters...

OK, well, maybe not... How about Sat. Oct 30th?
If it works out, it'll be good to see y'all again!

If on a weekend, I am there !
Patrick, truth, I was hoping to get some more of Jim's "bean stew" also.

I was looking at the Moon Calendars and it is looking like 10/30 the moon is almost full and it rises at around 7:30 (no idea if I am reading it right mind you.) Maybe someone else who has some idea on how to read the table like Daniel can confirm. While I don't mind getting together on a full moon, it does take some of umph out of the smaller lights if people want to compare.

I have to agree with Unnerv, the small lights will be washed out when the moon is full. Oh, and he was reading it right.

Usually, we end up with the big guns (and lasers) outside and the smaller edc style lights inside. Maybe a full moon is OK. I'm not sure the moon can compete with Jim H's big HID lights anyway.

I'll be there if at all possible.

Daniel

Well I just got a PM from Daniel:

Yep, you read it right. The moon rises at about 7:13 pm on Oct 30th. It will not be visible for a little while because of the houses around you. By 8:30 PM it will be fairly bright and high enough to see.

If you want to avoid the moon altogether, you can go for any day between Nov 3 (moonrise at 10:10 PM) and Nov 15 (moon set at 6:44 pm).

We'll have 1/2 moon or less from Nov 5th through the 19th. New moon is on Nov 12th.

So I would say a good alternate choice may be Saturday Nov 6th if the moon is a big deal. I am pretty sure that I can go either way right now, but I would lean more towards 11/6 since it gives people a little more time to plan, and less light pollution for "testing" whaddya guys think?

Saturdays are best for me - I usually don't get off work till late. 10/30 and 11/6 are both okay with me, but 11/6 is better.

The potluck BBQ seemed to work out good last time, or we could try something new. Anything is okay with me.

Ooops, the moon. Right.. Flashlights... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif

OK, That'll be the weekend BEFORE my move, but I'll try to swing it.

Looks like sunset is a little after 5:00 on the 6th. What time you want to get the party going Patrick?
If I can make it, I'll bring a shakelight, a Nuwai QIII modded by milkyspit, and some pot-stickers.

So it looks like 11/6 is looking pretty good for most people. We usually start around 6-6:30. That should give us time to eat and talk a bit while we are waiting for it to get really dark. I'll BBQ some terriyaki chicken to go with jpeg's pot stickers I guess.

I just talked to a non flashaholic friend of mine last night and he said would probably stop by so we'll have a newb to blind /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/str.gif possibly two if I can talk another budding flashaholic into coming.

Heh, I might have a newbie as well.

Now we need to come up with a Flashaholic Initiation Ritual. Mwahahaaaa /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin07.gif

I think there are many good initiations.

Ask them to (correctly) turn on 5 different flashlights with 5 diffeernet types of switches. Especially home made/modified ones.

Ask them to identify the light source in 4 or 5 lights.

See if they can successfully load change the batteies on a strange light in less than 30 seconds.

Plus, we can make bets who will be the first to experience the inevitable "don't shine into your remaining eye" moment.

And the defining question; What color do you get if you combine blue light with yellow light? ( http://science.howstuffworks.com/light6.htm )

I Liiiike newbies! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think Don mentioned something about a proctology light he's developing. Perhaps he would like to do the honors?

Cindy and I should be able to make it. Bringing the Thor light I still have on loan to the get together. After that, I'll be sending it back to the owner. Come look at in person before I send it back.
