One of mine Eneloop batteries, which i have been using in mine ultrafire C3 ,suddenly has little brown spots on the white surface directly next to the positive nod. There are 4 little brown, rustlike spots. One for every hole on the positive nod. Two are in front of the little holes on the positive nod. The other two are slightly next to the little holes on the positive nod.

i have not seen any evidence of vending, the battery has not been exposed to moist, no sign of a real leak and it's still working. Does anybody know what has caused this and what effect these spots might have?

I have tryed to make pictures of it, but mine (inexpensive) camera, isn't able to make good pictues. Just blurry, meaning less pictures.
*** edit *** a lot of tryes and editing later... pictures!

if the brown spots are right next to the top vents on the nipple, and jetting out from those vent holes, then there ARE signs of venting, because what you are descibing IS a sign of venting.
its not easy to get them to unseal like that, how did you manage to do that :)

when it vents some toxic electroyte comes out those vents, it would have been hissing too, that electrolyte can be brown already because the battery was cooked, or the electolyte can turn the paper there brown over time.
the stuff might have gotten on your charger or whatever device you used it in. you wouldnt want to unsuspectingly touch it, and then rub your eyes and stuff like that. so you should look and see where else the spew landed when it went off.
that will also give you a clue as to why it occured.

ohh Pictures :twothumbs
that is not so bad, why does the front spot on the first pic, look offset from the vent hole itself?
it has a tendacy to look like VAPOR was escaping, instead of actual liquids of any sort.

now you made me wonder, so i checked 30 of mine and no spots at all.

Is it Possible that its just rust spots? as rust could form quickest at the breaks in the metal (the holes) , did the cell get wet or damp, or used or stored in damp conditions?

well they look offset of the vent hole, because there are! well two of them, anyways. The other two are right at the vent holes.

i have not felt, smelled, heared or seen anything when i opened the battery tube on mine C3. Mine charger and the flashlight still look like new on the inside...

The battery was dry and i never get the wet or even damp. None of mine other eneloops (15 pieces) has any spots.

Hi Tjin,

did you use 2 eneloops in your C3?

No, not with this particulair eneloop. I do have another C3 with 2 eneloops. The eneloops on that one are like new.

It's just this single cell. It was recharged about 5 days ago. I have used it for 30 min continuesly and a few times for short periodes. When i loaded it in to the light, these spots where not there.

I had that happen to NiMH batteries I used in an electric toothbrush. The battery compartment became non-watertight after months of use and little rust spots appeared in the same location.
