To know how to charge, maintain and store rechargeable NiMH batteries helps maximize their lifespan. Getting a smart charger designed for the NiMH batteries first, and it could charge intelligently, also provide extra features such as conditioning, discharging and testing.

For new NiMH batteries, the power may be insufficient after long transportation from the factory. It's suggested to charge it first and then to use. New NiMH batteries take 3-4 cycles for optimal performance. During charging, pay attention the heat dissipation around the charger. Keep it away from direct sunlight or heat sources, which may make the battery overheat and affect the capacity. Also, avoid to overcharge the batteries since it will reduce their max capacity and it could overheat.

And it's better to run a full charge-discharge cycle before using the NiMH batteries, which helps to maintain their good performance. Besides, avoid to interrupt the charging process, for example, unplug the charger during charging to check how hot the battery is, and then plug the charger again. It may lead to an unstable charge cycle, which shortens the battery life.

When you are not using the NiMH batteries for a long time, to store them in a cool, dry place. The self-discharge of NiMH batteries is relatively high. If they are completely discharged and then stored, it will cause over-discharge, and damage the battery. These cells don't like being stored long term in a discharged state. According to the test, the best condition for the storage of NiMH batteries is to save about 80% of the charge. Or you can get them fully charged before storage, it will be fine.
