Is this powered with 1-2 cells?

Yes. 2 cells provide higher output.

I use unprotected 18650 mostly. Sometimes 2x18350 for more power but less runtime. I know 2xCR123 work as well but I barely use them. Other than that I have not kept up on current cell types to know more.
