Well, thought I'd try and see if I can track down one of Mac's "Torch" units again - I want one, someone out there's gotta have one they'll part with! :) I've got a Kroma that's somewhat unloved that I'd be happy to throw in as part of a trade/cash if someone's been jonesing for one, too.

PM me with offers! Thanks!

They do come up occasionally (I've seen a couple go buy[sic]). Keep your eyes on the
Sell lists.

Also keep your eyes out for Mag623 or Mag625 -- comparable critters.

A USL is in the same category, and they come up for grabs on occasion as well.

Good Hunting!

-RDH (who ain't lettin' his Torch go for anything less than Michele Pheiffer!)

Lux:

Thanks! I don't know how I forgot about the MaxBlaster, but CPF accepted a PM towards him - we'll see how it comes out!

Hey Lux,

Since you have all three, what are the differences in the beams of them? Is the MaxBlaster tighter, whiter, brighter, or what compared to the USL or Torch?

I have 3 Mac Torches, and also Mad MaxaBeams versions.

I don't have a USL, and there are many variations in what was available with it. I don't believe they used the 64623 in the USL, which is in the Torch & MaxBlaster.

If you are using the Osram 64623 100W bulb, it is the same in any light...except Mac's Torch uses a 14.4V battery pack of 12 x 2/3A NiMH cells, and MM added a 13th cell for 15.6V which makes it brighter. The beam of this large, transverse filament is ugly which is why they both use a MOP to diffuse out the artifacts....resulting in more of a flood spotlight effect.

The other bulb that has been used in the USL because it has a whiter color & cleaner beam pattern with a nice central spot is the 64625....but it is a more delicate 100W bulb, and cannot be driven with as many volts. It is best powered by 11 NiMH cells = 13.2V so you don't insta-flash it, so it is not as bright overall as the 64623. Another bulb that is close to the 64625, but even more delicate is the 62138 which I believe is also used in some of the USL's.

I posted my list of lumen output rankings in this thread...and I'm about to list a new #2 position light in that ranking.

Woah! You have three Torches and some Maxabeams?

Uh, if I don't hear back from Max, don't suppose I could convince you to part with one of 'em...?

Thanks Lux,

Some of the USLs shipped with a 62138 100W lamp. Not sure how that one compares to the others you listed. The USL with the focusable beam is nice. I may have to try to get a MaxBlaster to compare them someday.

I'm pretty sure that the 62138 being more delicate can only put out in the range of 2500-3000 lumens, but has a nicer beam pattern. I have a couple of those bulbs, so I'll test it out.

The 64625 tolerates a bit higher voltage and overall has the best beam quality and lumen output of these 3 bulbs. Even though it is less than the 4200-4600L of the Torch==>MaxBlaster using their 64623 bulbs, the beam color and pattern actually is more effective...especially in a FM3H-2. I converted one of my Torch's over to a 13.2V 64625 w/ FM3H-2 and love it.

I agree with Lux, I have 2 Maxblasters. (1) as ordered and one w/ 13.2V and 64625. Both with FM3H-2's. The 625 setup is by all visual accounts a better setup. Mad Maxabeam is a heckuva nice person to deal with BTW.
