TV1J Star

I purchased a TV1J Star from The Shoppe. I thought it looked somewhat different from some of the Stars I had used in the past, but went ahead anyway and tried to pry the emitter off. Sure enough, I wrecked it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif. The emitter has no base, but is actually open on the bottom /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif. I know I've pulled emitters off before, so why are the Stars different now?

Thats very odd...did the slug stay stuck to the star? Any chance of a pic?
If you stuck a blade under the black luxeon casing and tried prying the emitter off, chances are that the slug stayed glued to the star while the rest of the LED comes off. Correct technique is to get 2 pliers and bend the star in half away from the emitter. It should 'pop' right off.
There's always a variation in the amount of glue they use.

I also bought a couple of them and pried off the emitters for my purposes but they were no different from any other emitter that I've bought off CPF. Maybe part of the emitter got separated when you pulled it off.

Lux3 stars have a thicker aluminum heatsink vs the 1W Luxeons and Lumileds has changed the design several times that I am aware of. Mostly minor changes. Long time ago, they used to use a thin PCB on top of the Aluminum. Now the LED is glued directly to the Aluminum. LuxeonIII have a thicker alumimum vs the 1W stars.
