Bob:
There were a few posts about this quite a while ago. I bought two of the 4 watt LAs. On alkalines one was great. It was a little brighter in the hot spot but the hot spot was probably twice the diameter of the standard bulb. Bigger and brighter spill as well. I was very happy. The second one was as bright but it didn't seems like the LA was set up quite right in the reflector. You could see the shadow of the filament (batwings) and overall the beam was no where as good as the first. YRMV. I never bothered to do a full run time but they are damn bright.

thanks, jenks.

i figure that i have the UK bodies, might as well use them!
quickbeam mentioned the filament shadows as well...not sure if i would like that, but it is only ~$8 for the LA.

take care,
Bob

I bought the regular 2 watt lamp some time ago with the UK 4AA AS2. I really, really love this flashlight system.

Now...I recently purchased the Rechargeable LA for use with 4 NiMH AAs.

Wow! I LOVE this flashlight system!

The beam on mine is smooth and really bright! It just seems like the perfect set up! I just wish I could get an equivalent set up with an LED (same throw and brightness). Until that time, I guess I'll just be buying more LAs if they burn out or break.

Although, I use LEDs for almost ALL of my flashlight needs. I only use the 4AA for spotlighting things at a distance. If we are just walking around or camping the LEDs work just fine with plenty of light and long run times. The UK eLED in particular gives adequate light for anything close up and lasts with even brightness for 12 hours.

thanks fo the heads-up, ikendu!

i am very impressed with UK lights as well.
the combo of formafactor, reasonable price, plastic (yup, i actually like plastic!), durability and flexibility make them a winner in my book. the eLED 4aa is quite amazing for $20.

also, i was recently searching through some old threads, and it appears that the lamp assemblies on the 2 watt last quite some time, so perhaps the 4watt will be similar.
