One of the amateur satellites I worked on was launched in Nov '74 and worked for six years until the battery pack failed (shorted). Recently (June??) the satellite started working again whenever it was in sunlight. Apparently the short has partially healed itself enough that the power from the solar cells can operate the transponders.

Hang on to those old NiCads maybe your Grandchildren can recharge them...
