Unprotected Vs. Protected batteries

Sorry in advance. I know this is a noob question. I have a prety well understanding about electricity, and its components; However I have never heard the terms "protected", & "unprotected" batteries. What it the difference? Are unprotected bad for your flashlight? Thanks in advance!
