I realize that charging in pairs is, generally, deeply frowned up by the regulars here. But I was wondering if that practice is really that harmful to cells that are always used in pairs as well?
I have a batch of standard Eneloop AAs (the old HR-3UTG type) that I've been keeping in pairs for use in game controllers (Xbox 360, Wii), some Eneloop Lite AAs (HR-3UQ) in sets of four for a touchscreen remote, and some standard Eneloop AAAs (the old HR-4UTG type) in pairs for wireless headphones.
Im using a simple Energizer Rapide (CHQA-EU) charger that, unfortunately, only charges in pairs.
I've made sure to always keep the pairs intact, whether in use or while charging, and these cells typically see no more than 2 cycles per month.
Ive been considering picking up a set of Eneloop XXs when they come out next month, but Id rather not ruin brand new cells with bad charging practices. On the other hand, the cost of a new charger could easily outweigh the benefits of using rechargeables in the first place.
So my question to the experts is: Given the way I use my cells, is charging in pairs really that big of a problem?
