The charge/discharge idea of the capacitor is good--if you keep your board clean to reduce leakage through moisture, and use a low-leakage capacitor, it should work great. There is theoretically no leakage in the gate of a FET, so you have only to worry about the cap and the wiring. My biggest concern would be exposure to humidity--perhaps coating it with some dielectric laquer would help.

Yeah, that's a good idea too -- coating it so the cap
stays charged longer or doesnt charge up by accident.

Next, im going to take a good look at the power diss
in the transistor in the case where the gate charges
a fraction of the way up, rather then all the way
up past the gate threshold voltage and thus turns the
MOSFET on only part way.
Normally, the MOSFET is either fully on or fully off, but
with a partial drive signal it could be in the linear
region. I'd like to see just how much power it has
to dissipate at the point of max power with maybe power
supply voltages of 4,5, and 6 volts or so.
