Nichia had violet laser diodes a couple of years ago, but they were just that: bare laser diodes. No optics, no driver electronics (PSU), no nothing.

I'm guessing that Roithner's laser modules are using Nichia's violet diode lasers.

It won't be long now (a year, maybe two) before we start seeing BLUE directly-injected laser modules. None of those funky crystals, high-powered IR diode lasers, or other horse puckey. Just like red pointers, only a heck of a lot more expen$ive. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

A bare blue laser diode (just by itself, no PSU or optics) cost around $5,000.00 and lasts only 500 hours.

Hmmmmmm ... 405nM? That would cause quite a few things to flouresce as it's right on the edge of long UV. Could actually be an interesting toy/tool. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The million dollar question is can it make a organic dyes go super radiant like my simple and cheap, but quite effective, nitrogen laser. I can get any color of the rainbow to come out of it and for a lot less than 2 grand.

The next generation of DVD players will use blue lasers so expect the cost of blue laser diodes to drop through the floor.

If the laser really lases around 405nm, the beam would appear to be a slightly bluish violet to the eye, not too unlike the surface of a lit fluorescent "blacklight" tube that you might find in a fluorescent Derma-Spec, "money detector", or cat urine detector light. The laser would appear more purplish and less bluish than common 405nm LEDs, because the broadband emission found in all NUV LEDs would not be present.

Most objects that fluoresce under blue and violet light would go apes*** when exposed to the beam from this laser.

I get email from Roithner Lasertechnik every now and again, but didn't get this one.

I want one of those purple lasers too, but it's also priced a bit out of my range. And I want a Maxabeam too. And I want one of those electric wheelchairs that goes up & down the stairs, so I'm not stuck here when the elevator poops out. And I want... oh the hell with it. My wants list would probably take up the whole thread.
And yes, some of them are flashlights. Like I need some more of them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
