voltage matching NiMH\'s

I seem to recall reading somewhere that NiMH batteries must (well, should) be matched for best results. (Or perhaps it was matched for similar discharge rates so that any one battery didn't bear the brunt of the load????)
Does anyone know:
1. Is this true?
2. Why this is true
3. How close do the voltages need to "match"?
4. How to go about matching.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm looking to replace the NiMH's that came as a battery pack in my Nightrider Digital Headtrip bike light. A great light, but pricey, especially considering the shortened battery life caused by their 460mW (2.8Watt) Microbrute charger. Isn't that a bit high for a 1200mAH battery?

Thanks, Alan
