I was looking(salavating??) at the WA group buy. Listed was the WA 1183. I have never heard of that one in all the forums. It is rated at 410 lumens at 4.7 v and 966 at 6 volt. That seems like a natural for the magcharger. With all
the knowledgeable people in this forum ...what is wrong with this bulb? 2minute runtime at 6 volts or is it a handgreande waiting to flash??

I noticed the same thing, but the rated life is only 75 hours.

I think that much overdrive will probably instaflash it or come close. The 1160 is rated at 550 hours if I remember correctly, and only like 175 at 5.5 volts.

I think it would be incredibly bright, but suspect you are in instaflash land there.

The rated life of the WA01183 is 75 hours.
The rated life of the WA01160 is 550 hours.

While the 1183's lumen output is about 50% greater than the 1160's while overdriven at 6V (966 vs 618), the actual perceived brightness will not be 50% greater.

The human eye's sensitivity to light is logarithmic, not linear. If you double the flux of a light source, most observers will not rate the increase as 100% brighter, they might perceive it as 50% brighter.

Most users prefer the longer rated life of the 1160 as a fair trade for the slight disadvantage in perceived brightness.

That's my take on it, anyway.

On edit: Crud, Bill beat me by a minute! Must learn to type faster...

Thanks for the great info. I see Wilkey used an 1183 on a 6volt stinger conversion. Claiming a 20minute run time. Since I reread that I thought it was funny that he said that for a really bright stinger hp you could use and 1160. According to that chart the 1183 at 6v puts out substantially more...just as I think I am starting to understand......
Of course I had another idea (ready to be dissallusioned again..lol) The stock stinger is roughly 125 lumens (I have been told) if you were to use an 1183 and underdrive (an unusuall term for this forum) at 3.6 would it not still produce considerable more light than the stock bulb. The reaso I ask I am getting ready to buy one of the Pila conversion for one of my stingers, the other is getting a metal hydride battery fo hours of run time. But it could always be a little brighter.

Nope, that's not right. I do use the WA01183 but only in a 2C driven by 4 x 1/2 sub-C cells. This bulb is bright and casts a tight spot but it does not take very much overdrive at all. In fact, I've popped enough attempting to run on 5 cells to realize that this is strictly a 4-cell bulb. In my 2C, it gets 17.5 minutes each time, every time I do a full pack run. Over 20 minutes on intermittent usage. IMO, underdriving this bulb would result in an unacceptably yellow beam color.

The 6V Stinger conversion uses either a) the Ultrastinger bulb, b) WA01111 at spec or c) WA01160 overdriven.

Keep in mind that this is quite a unique bulb. It is low voltage but very high current. At 3.85A, it only runs well on a) high current nicad or nimh or b) triply parallel stacks of SF213 or c) double stacks of <2200mAh AA rechargeables.

Bill,
I have not run it against the CL1499 but I have run it against the Mag60 on a standard 2.5Ah MC pack...it's pretty darn close. The Mag60 spill light is brighter but the 1183 spot is better and it throws a tighter beam. Considering that this is coming from a 2C light, that's not bad.

I have one spare potted WA01183 left. You wanna test it? Only on 4 cells please. It does not tolerate overdrive, at least from HC cells.

Okla,
Always glad to be of service.

Wilkey
